1 The Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters (NRCC) is proud to introduce its first LABOR RELATIONS ACADEMY for Council Representatives and Team Leaders. This ACADEMY is designed to provide a state of the art learning experience in six separate LABOR RELATIONS subjects, with the goal of ensuring that NRCC union officials remain in the vanguard of providing the highest quality representation to all of our members in the field. Participation in this program will develop a cadre of Council Representatives with finely honed skills in the most important aspects of LABOR law, negotiations, dispute resolution and union building. This strategic development of thoughtful, imaginative and highly skilled LABOR leaders will be vital in advancing the interests of the 40,000 hard working men and women represented by the ACADEMY , offered in partnership with the School of Management and LaborRelations, Rutgers University, will consist of six courses offered over a period of three months.
2 The instructors for these classes were carefully selected; all of them are highly regarded practitioners in the LABOR RELATIONS will consist of a mix of lecture, hands on learning, and since we canalways learn from one another, a collaborative sharing of best will consist of approximately twenty Council Representatives/TeamLeads who will move through the program as one unit. For those traveling a distance, rooms will be provided at the Heldrich Hotel in New RELATIONS ACADEMYFALL - 2016 The ACADEMY classes will begin at 9:00am, lunch will be served on site at 12:00pm and classes will conclude at 4 ACADEMY course progression is as follows.
3 September 20 Conflict Resolution, Leadership and CommunicationSeptember 21 LABOR Law in the Construction IndustryOctober 11 Organizing and Union BuildingOctober 12 LABOR and Politics in the Building TradesNovember 1 Collective Bargaining and Grievance HandlingNovember 2 Ethical Standard and Conflicts of Interests September 20 Conflict Resolution, Leadership and CommunicationThis course will focus on productive communications and problem solving strategies. The class will examine theories and practices of conflict resolution, effective leadership, and communication.
4 Participants will learn how to solve problems and communicate effectively with their members, employers, and the public. Instructor: Saul A. Rubinstein, PhD. 9AM - 4 PMThis course provides an overview of American employment and LABOR laws pertinent to the construction industry with a focus on unfair LABOR practices, jurisdictional disputes and issues related to ownership of work. It prepares union leaders to protect their members in the employment relationship and to avoid legal liabilities for their : James M. 5 The course will also discuss strategies for building coalitions with community and LABOR : Carla Katz, Esq. 9AM - 4 PMLABOR RELATIONSCOURSES:September 21 LABOR Law in the Construction IndustryOctober 11 Organizing and Union BuildingThis course provides an overview of the national and state political systems, processes, and structures, examining the role of building trades unions in New Jersey and American politics and how state and national politics directly and indirectly affect their : AJ Sabath 9AM - 4 PMThis course provides an overview of the collective bargaining process for the building trades unions.
6 Participants will learn how to competitively and successfully negotiate collective bargaining agreements and how to effectively handle grievances and disciplinary matters. Instructor: James Mastriani, Arbitrator 9AM - 4 PMThis course teaches union officials to identify and avoid conflicts and potential conflicts of interest in the workplace. Participants will examine a broad array of ethical issues that employees may encounter in the course of their work. Actual case studies focusing on federal and state statutes will be examined. 7 October 12 LABOR and Politics in the Building TradesNovember 1 Collective Bargaining and Grievance HandlingNovember 2 Ethical Standard and Conflicts of InterestsSaul A. Rubinstein, Rubinstein is a leading scholar on the subject of how joint LABOR and management collaborations achieve organizational innovations. He teaches courses on the dynamics of work and organiztion, LABOR and corporate restructuring, and employee involvement and new work organizations in the Rutgers University School of Management and LABOR M. Cooney, M. Cooney, Esq., is an Instructor with the Rutgers University Schoolof Management and LABOR RELATIONS , in the LABOR Studies and Employment RELATIONS Department, where he teaches courses including Employee Privacy Rights, Employment Law, Employment Discrimination Law and Immigration Law and Employee Rights, along with certificate program courses for Human Resources, LABOR RELATIONS , and Union Cooney also serves as a neutral LABOR Arbitrator and Mediator.
8 Previously, Mr. Cooney worked as an attorney with Weissman and Mintz LLC, Somerset, , representing employees and LABOR unions before federal and State courts, administrative agencies, and in arbitration proceedings, as well as handling immigration cases. Prior to that, he was an associate with Apruzzese, McDermott, representing employers in LABOR , employment law, and immigration matters federal courts. He earned his degree from the University of Miami (Florida) School of Law and his from Rutgers University. He is an executive board member of the LABOR and Employment RELATIONS Association (LERA), Katz, A. Katz, Esq.
9 Is a faculty member with the School of Management and LABOR RELATIONS (SMLR) at Rutgers University in the Department of LABOR Studies and Employment RELATIONS where she teaches LABOR studies and LABOR and employment law. Prior to joining the faculty full-time, Ms. Katz taught at SMLR as a Visiting Lecturer for more than twelve years teaching courses in Collective Bargaining, Union Organizing, Women and Work and Occupational Safety and Health among others. Carla is a member of the Executive Council of the AAUP-AFT, Rutgers (FT Faculty and TA/Gas) and was a member of the bargaining committees on behalf of NTT Katz is also an attorney with the law firm of Cohen Placitella Roth PC in Red Bank, New Jersey.
10 Prior to joining the firm, she was an attorney with Fox and Fox LLP in Livingston New Jersey. Her legal practice is primarily focused on LABOR and employment law representing unions and employees. She works closely with New Jersey s firefighters and other public Katz has a long history of representation of union members and workers, including nine years as the elected president of the Communications Workers of America, Local 1034. Additionally, Ms. Katz was appointed Commissioner of the New Jersey Public Employment RELATIONS Commission and served from 2002 to Katz is admitted to practice law in New Jersey. She holds a Juris Doctor degree from Seton Hall School of Law.
