This type of levelcrossing is monitored locally by the train crew, which in practice means that barrier failures can only bedetected when a train is Train drivers expect to approach the stop board protecting train crew operated barrier levelcrossings when the road is open to traffic. If the barriers are already down when the train arrives, the traindriver is able to recognise this as an irregularity and report the failure to the signaller in accordance with theRule Book. Other Level Crossing failures that occur during operation are indicated to the train driver by thelevel Crossing control and indication facility (see Provision of control and indication system on page7).
