The Commonwealth of The BAHAMAS consists of approximately 700 islands, stretching from the coast of Florida almost to the shores of Haiti. Only about 20 of the islands are inhabited, with the majority of the population concentrated on the islands of New Providence (Nassau) and Grand Bahama (Freeport).

2 The Turks and Caicos Islands, though a part of the same archipelago, form a British Dependent Territory and are therefore politically separate from the BAHAMAS . The Embassy maintains a separate list of Lawyers who practice in the Turks & Caicos Islands. The rate for the first-class airmail from the United States to The BAHAMAS is 65 cents per half ounce. Registered mail may be sent through the BAHAMAS postal service and return receipts obtained. International reply coupons should be used when it is desired to pre-pay a reply. Cable service is operated by the BAHAMAS Government and is available to all parts of the world. Collect cables to individuals are not accepted, but collect telephone calls may be placed.
