Finding cool uses for things that would normally be thrown out is fun! Litter free Activity book page 4 Scrappy Placemat Collage Stuff you need: some CLEAN Litter (like clean candy wrappers, or even pictures of Litter from magazines) a laminating machine (ask an adult!)
3 One piece of construction paper for each placemat What to do: Find some CLEAN Litter ! You can bring some from home or look for some outside. Arrange the Litter on your piece of paper in a creative way make a picture or a design. Glue on the Litter . Ask an adult to get your placemat laminated so it lasts a long time, even if you spill something on it! Beautiful things may come from unexpected places! Be creative when designing your collage! Litter free Activity book page 5 Scrappy Have a Poetry Contest Write a poem about Litter Include as many of these words as you can: Litter Garbage Trash Prevention Junk Scrap Reduce Reuse Recycle Environment Pitch in Clean up Display your poetry on the walls Invite people to come out and judge your contest If we all pitch in, we can keep Thunder Bay clean!
4 Get Creative! Get your message out! Let people know how you feel about littering! Litter free Activity book page 6 Scrappy Scavenger Hunt 1. Pick an area (like a park, school grounds, or street) 2. Using latex or work gloves and a garbage bag, pick up 10 different things that have been disposed of. 3. Sort them into 3 categories: i. things that can be reused ii. things that can be recycled iii. things that need to be thrown away always put Litter in the proper place! Trash, scrap, junk, and all different names for garbage.
5 Some can be reused or recycled, and some have to be stored or disposed of. Litter free Activity book page 7 Scrappy Pride Walk Choose an area that you know has a lot of Litter . Identify which types of items are littered there. For example: loose papers, candy wrappers, coffee cups. Discuss what you can do about the problem, and make a list of your ideas. Pick one idea and work to make it happen. Discuss what you would do if you see someone littering. Litter is in YOUR hands! Children of all ages can participate in a Pride Walk . Think about where that piece of Litter might go. Will the wrapper end up in the water system? Will an animal or bird think that it is a piece of food? What are the consequences of dropping this piece of Litter instead of putting it where it belongs? Read your story to a younger child you know, or to an adult, or even your friends, and tell them how important it is NOT to Litter . Only YOU can guarantee where your garbage goes. What is the journey that one piece of Litter makes?
9 Litter free Activity book page 13 Scrappy Write a play or a Create a play or a skit to encourage people not to Litter or to demonstrate the negative effects Litter has on Thunder Bay Use recyclable items for props, costumes, scenery Involve and encourage different age groups to participate Have a performance family, friends and business owners If we all care and do our share, we can keep Thunder Bay clean and green!In order to keep our environment clean, it s important to get the message out! Litter free Activity book page 14 Scrappy Create a Trash Graph Choose an area to focus on ( park, block, school yard) Collect Litter from that area (wear gloves) Bring the trash back to your group As a group, separate the types of Litter you have collected into the following categories: o Paper o Plastic o Metal o Glass o Waste Make a graph to record your findings, and discover what makes the MOST Litter in your area Always put Litter in the right place.
10 All kinds of things can be saved and used again. Litter free Activity book page 15 Scrappy Creative Writing Project Write a funny story, three paragraphs long, about your piece of Litter . Use a story map to plan your story, and a thesaurus to include a variety of words. You could give your piece of Litter a name, and send it on a wild adventure! Remember, keep your adventures Litter - free ! The next time you go outside, find a piece of Litter , think about how it got there and what might happen to it next.
