A few years ago, american river College received a highly competitive TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO SSS) grant, the first TRIO grant ever awarded within the Los rios Community College District . The TRIO SSS grant has allowed the College to establish an effective student support model and delivery system for a critical population of students.

The foundations that have been laid through the TRIO SSS grant makes the College particularly well positioned for additional TRIO funding. The College is focusing on the Upward Bound and Veterans Upward Bound programs within the wide range of TRIO programs because these programs speak to critical priorities at the College addressing the needs of low income students and veterans, and increasing degree completion and student success among all students. american river College also expects these TRIO grants to provide ideal opportunities for innovative cross cutting career technical education projects, going the extra mile to propel students beyond degree completion to successful employment in healthy or growing industries.

Funding Information: TRIO Upward Bound: $250,000 per year (for 5 years) TRIO Veterans Upward Bound: $250,000 per year (for 5 years) Local Contact: Pamela D. Two of eight inter related economic drivers for regional joint action are to increase entrepreneur and small business support, and to attract, educate, and retain talent.

In undertaking an entrepreneurship initiative, Cosumnes river College would be in a position to support all seven identified high performing opportunity areas (Health Services, Agriculture, Information Technology, Education, Business & Financial Service and Clean Energy Technology). Initial ideas include developing the College s emerging entrepreneurship program to include civic engagement and leadership component, an incubation center, and an expanded menu of programs/curricula for entrepreneurs and potential entrepreneurs. The College s existing award winning student entrepreneur club would be a part of the initiative as well. To maximize opportunities Cosumnes river College will also leverage complementary efforts such as State Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg s proposed Dropout Reduction and Workforce Development Bond Act and initiatives of the Elk Grove Economic Development Corporation and the Elk Grove and Sacramento Metro Chambers.

Cosumnes river College is also seeking funds for expanding programs such as the Building Performance and Energy assessment degree and certificate (Home Energy Audit) programs established through the DOL funded GreenForce Initiative of the District . These programs have been successful in leading graduates directly into jobs and were recently highlighted by Rep. Matsui on a tour of Sacramento industries. Expansion efforts would focus on job placement services for students within the energy efficiency industry. Cosumnes river College is also interested in funding that would allow the College to align its television program with 21st century technologies such as high definition equipment to keep pace with the industry.

Students in the Television program have had a high rate of success finding employment in local broadcast TV and in the television industry of southern California. The proposal involves the design and implementation of a course of study linked through project based curriculum and contextualized to real world science problems of particular interest to the students.

The focus will be on the doing of science and not directly learning the details of scientific principles. By creating the need for math, reading, writing, and critical thinking in the context of solving actual scientific problems, the stigma and the disengagement students often feel in basic skills classes will be avoided. This core curriculum would be supported by a comprehensive suite of student and academic services, including Outreach focused on underrepresented groups and academically at risk students ( , African american , Latino, and returning Veterans) Proactive delivery of student services in which a case management approach is used involving both counselors and faculty Explicit focus on both cognitive and affective skill development Service learning opportunities SCC is uniquely positioned to successfully develop and implement this program: The College has an extensive array of existing outreach initiatives focusing on the program s target populations.

The Summer Success Academy has a proven track record delivering highly successful courses and workshops that help students get a head start on achieving their higher education goals. SCC has a large number of sophisticated scientific instruments that can provide students a real world science experience. The College has experience developing science based contextualized curriculum. Funding Information: Basic Skill Acceleration Project: $550,000 (for a three year project; Year one: Develop curriculum including project based activities and begin outreach activities; Years two and three: Implement the curriculum and conduct research quality evaluation of the impact of the program on student engagement, success, and retention) Local Contact.
