A computer scientist bytrade, Knuth decided to write his own document processing program to improve the waymathematics is typeset. The result of this ten to fifteen yearendeavor was TEX, whichrhymes with bleccchh. It stands, according to Knuth, for the Greek letters tau, epsilon, and chi, though I m not sure why he chose those letters. In theearly 1980 s, Leslie Lamportdeveloped LATEX, a document preparation system built for TEX but with lots of bells andwhistles designed to make your document-preparing life easier. Getting to the point, in thelate 1990 s a group of slackers cum computer scientists developed a partially (and, over time, increasingly) WYSIWYG document processor that creates LATEX documents. For reasonsI ve yet to fathom but can t imagine are very deep, they decided to call it Why Use LYXF irst, why use any document preparation system?

If the back of an envelope was goodenough for the Gettysburgh Address, why isn t a sheet of notebook paper good enough for aproject report? Let s keep this simple: you ain t Abe Lincoln. The fact of the matter is forbetter or for worse your work will always be judged partly, if not mostly, by its more polished your reports are, the more impressed your boss and co-workers (and, moreimportantly here, your math professor) will why LYX? Certainly standard word processors like Wordperfect andMicrosoft Wordoffer equation editors with which mathematics can be slappedonto the page. In fact, severalcompanies are beginning to develop packages expressly for writing mathematics, for exampleMicrosoft s MathType for Windows. For us, the advantage of using LYX is that it is on yourcalclab account, so I know everyone has access to a Starting LYX at Texas A & M UniversityYou should have a calclab account assigned to you for M442 (I ll pass these out on the firstday of class, or as soon as I get them).

Log in and click on the six-pointed geometric figurein the bottom left corner of your screen. Go toApplications, Mathematicsand chooseLYX. (Alternatively, your student accountmayhave a short-cut icon for LYX. Failing thesetwo possibilities, you can also open a terminal window and simply typelyxat the unixprompt.) If LYX asks if you want to create appropriate directories or something, just let , you re there!2M442 LyX Howard3 LYX Creating a Simple DocumentLYX should splash up a simple logo over a gray screen. If the screen isn t maximized, youcan maximize it in the usual way, by clicking on the square in the upper right corner of theform. To create a document click onFile,New. LYX will start a document, giving you onestrip in which to write your first line. Usually, this will be your title, so typeProject you ve typed this in, click on the arrows just to the right of the wordStandardandchooseTitlefrom the drop-downenvironmentsmenu (you will have to scroll down to findthis).

Notice that LYX centers your text and makes it look large and bold, like a title and LYX will add a line for you to continue with. In this next line, typeyour name as you would like it to appear in your reports, and then chooseAuthorfromthe environments. Finally, let s start the first section of our report. HitEnterand thentypeOverviewon the new line. Use your environments menu again to designate this as aSection. Notice that you have two options when choosing a section,SectionandSection*.UsingSection* indicates that you want to suppress section taking a look at our handiwork, let s put at least a fewwords of text into oursection. HitEnterand type,In this project we study a bunch of really cool takea look at what you ve done, chooseView,DVI(alternatively, typeControl-d; that is,holding theControlkey while depressingd).

This simple command does a whole lot ofstuff, of which all you need to know right now is that a page containing LYX s typesetversion of your work should pop up onto the screen. Take a quick gander and then click onQuitto drop it back down. This might be a good time to save your work. ChooseFile,Save As, then type in the file name of your choice (typically with a .lyx extension) and clickOkay. (Notice thatControl-salso saves your document.)An incredibly useful option that you should become aware of right from the start isEdit,Undo. As you might expect, this command will return your documentto its state prior toyour last command. Repeated applications can undo a series of Document TypesBefore moving on to equations, figures and tables, let s takea look at a few optional documenttypes (which LYX refers to as documentclasses).

Click onDocumentand that the current document class isarticle, which is the one I ve primarily been usingto prepare notes in this course. Click on the black arrow to the right of the document classbox, and choose the next document classarticle (AMS), thenOKat the bottom of thescreen. See what you think. To go back to your original document class, simply chooseDocument, Settingsagain, then choosearticle. Feel free to experiment and turn in yourreports in whatever style you think is best. One caveat here is that occasionally when youmove back and forth from one class to another, something getspermanently changed. Myadvice is to always save your work just before trying a new document class, and if you don t1 Whenever I mean for you to type something in, I will put it in italics on the page.

This in no wayindicates that you should type it in italics into your document. (Though see Section about fonts.)3M442 LyX Howardlike the new document class, just don t save the new result. In particular,Edit,Undowon tcut it Formatting Your DocumentTheDocument, Settingsmenu offers a number of options for controlling the appearanceof your document. Below, I list a few of these that I find particularly useful. Text second option isText Layout. Here, you can choose the fontand the font size for your article, and you can also set paragraph separation to beeitherindent(as is the case with the document you re currently reading),orskip, forwhich paragraphs are separated by short vertical spaces. (You reports will typicallybe written in the indent format, while typeset homework willtypically be in the skipformat.)

In the event that you chooseskip, LYX allows you to choose the height of thespace. fourth option isPage Margins. Choose this one and click on thebox denotedDefault will allow you to customize the margins of yourpage. Most of the documents for M442, including this one, have been printed withone-inch margins all around (though the top and bottom of thepage have additionalspacing as well). tenth option isBullets. With this, you can control how bullets willappear in your document. One of the options is a dagger, used to the left of thesepoints. In most cases, I recommend you use the simplest option possible, a bold Setting PreferencesIn order to set preferences for your version of lyx, chooseTools, Preferences. The secondoption under theLook and Feelsubmenu isscreen fonts, and this is where you will setthe basic types of fonts that you ll be using for your documents.

TheRomantext,Sansseriftext andTypewritertext can all be chosen from the associated drop-down menus, and the text boxes to the right let you preview your choices. One fairly safe bet is TimesNew Roman. The fourth option under theLook and Feelsubmenu isGraphics, and thereis one option you might want to set here. LYX has a feature calledinstant thisis on, then equations you type in are shown in almost the form with which they they willappear in your final copy. This option is setoffby default, and it s fairly convenient, so youmight want to set iton. Finally, keep these changes by clicking onSaveat the bottom ofthe Changing FontsThere are a number of ways to change the way your text will appear on the page. HitCtrl-eat the prompt and typeemphasized words. Notice how any text you type followingCtrl-e2So to Howardappears in italics.
