MARCH 21, 2022 PULMONARY REHAB WEEK

MARCH 21, 2022 National PULMONARY Rehabilitation Week was celebrated MARCH 13th MARCH 19th, 2022 at Regional Health PULMONARY Rehabili-tation. We celebrated the role of PULMONARY rehabilitation in enhancing the quality of life of the individuals with lung disease. Chronic Lung disease patients depend on respiratory therapists to get them through the acute exacer-bations caused by their conditions. However, these patients need respiratory therapists to help them after the acute episode is over as well and this is where PULMONARY rehabilitation comes in.

1 MARCH 21, 2022 National PULMONARY Rehabilitation Week was celebrated MARCH 13th MARCH 19th, 2022 at Regional Health PULMONARY Rehabili-tation.

2 These life-enhancing programs show patients how they can live well despite having chronic lung disease. They are also credited for keeping these patients healthier and out of the costly acute care setting. PULMONARY Rehabilitation can benefit anyone affected by chronic PULMONARY disease, includ-ing persons with the following conditions: COPD, Asthma, Chronic Bronchitis, Emphysema, Bronchiectasis, Cystic Fibrosis, Poliomyelitis, Collagen Vascular Lung disorder, Lung Transplant, Lung Resection, Occupational and Environmental Lung Diseases.

3 Individualized treatment plans are determined by each participant s medical condition and individual goals are established by the participant and the health care team. PULMONARY Rehabilitation meets two times a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, typically for twelve weeks. A physician referral is required for enroll-ment for patients who have a qualifying diagnosis. We receive referrals from internal Pulmo-nologists, primary care physicians, as well as outlying hospitals and physicians. Our program is under the medical direction of Dr.

4 Carlos Kummerfeldt, Pulmonologist. PULMONARY REHAB is conducted by Karen Gilkey, RRT. The PULMONARY Rehabilitation Week 2022 celebration included decoration of the REHAB suite, healthy snacks and a goody bag for them to take home at the end of the week. For each day the patients attended in February up to PULMONARY Rehabilitation Week they were entered into a drawing for a finger pulse oximeter. The drawing was held on Friday MARCH 18th 2022 and the winner was Miranda PULMONARY REHAB patients were invited to comment on how has attending PULMONARY REHAB benefited you?

5 One of our current patients Mr. Bill Kindred wrote: Having recovered fairly well after my first bout with COVID I contracted COVID again in January. This time I spent 17 days in the hospital because the oxygen level in my blood was too low. I was discharged from the hospital on oxygen and requested I enter a PULMONARY REHAB program. Having been in Samson s REHAB program after my first round with COVID I knew it would be my choice. I am entering in my third week in the program and have already noticed an improvement in my strength and decrease in my need for oxygen.

6 Karen is so very attentive and shows sincere concern for my well-being and improvement. I believe under her direction and encouragement I will meet my goals. I am very pleased and thankful to have such a fine pulmo- nary REHAB unit in our community. 10 We kept him home and took care of him as long as we were able to. His last treatments knocked the wind out of his sails, and he was hospitalized for a week. We did not think he was going to make it through that. We were faced with the decision of what we were going to do started to look at long term care, because there was just no way we could bring him home, and there was no one we could hire to look after him. We were going to be discharged from the hospital, so the social worker there gave us some options and put us in touch with the Shanti Niketan Hospice Home.
