SCOPE OF Survey Marinetech, Inc. examined the above named vessel at the request of XXXXXXX The fair market value specified on the first page was derived from commercially published used boat price guides, condition of vessel and other means. The vessel described in this Report was inspected for compliance with National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), the United States coast guard (USCG), Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA), and the State of New York. The Survey consisted of visual observations via available spaces and inspection ports, percussion testing, moisture meter readings, and voltage/resistance measurements with multi-meter. The purpose of this Survey was to determine the physical condition and approximate market value of the vessel.
4 This Survey does not address the vessel s stability characteristics and inherent defects, internal condition of machinery, or items that cannot be readily observed without intrusive removal of headliners, flooring, and panels, which would cause damage to the vessel. This Report is based on an out of the water inspection while suspended in stands. III. CONDITIONS An inspection was conducted on 06/09/07. The weather was drizzling, approximately 65F, 95% relative humidity and winds from the SE at 10 MPH. A second visit was made on 6/15/07 to check moisture measurements. The weather was sunny and 75 F with 70% humidity. IV. OVERVIEW The Trintella 38 was built in Holland at the Anne Wever Yacht She has a rounded hull with a lead encapsulated keel. Forward and aft cabins sleep two each. The main mast is a deck stepped single spreader mast head rig.
5 The mizzen is also deck stepped. This auxiliary sailboat is powered by a 50 HP 4-cylinder Yanmar diesel. The rudder had a full skeg with upper and lower bearings attached to the stainless steel rudderpost. There is a stainless steel grid encapsulated within the rudder and welded to the rudderpost. The decks are covered with screwed-in teak planks. This vessel in better than average condition for that year model. CODING OF FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Findings and recommendations are color-coded as follows: SAFETY findings and recommendations are safety issue items that often fail to comply with ABYC, Federal (CFR), State, NFPA or coast guard regulations (USCG). ROUTINE findings and recommendations are non-regulatory deficiencies. PREVENTIVE findings and recommendations for preventive maintenance and upgrades to improve equipment and performance. HULL CHARACTERISTICS AND STRUCTURE The hull is a modified rounded bottom constructed of FRP solid laminate with longitudinal and transverse stringers that are glassed over.
7 The keel is made of lead, glassed over and the rudder is attached to a full skeg with upper and lower bearings, made of FRP and cored. An overall examination of the hull was conducted with emphasis on checking for delamination, moisture intrusion and collision damage through percussion testing and moisture meter readings. No problems were found except for the delaminated rudder described on next page. The gel-coat is in good condition with few scratches. Photo 3. Propeller, rudder. Thru-hulls were examined and found to be in good condition and securely fastened with enough sealant contacting the hull. The hull was randomly tested with an Electrophysics GRP-33 moisture meter. No excessive moisture was noted. Some slightly moist readings were noted near the water line but this is often seen with boats that have been just hauled out.
8 Rudder appeared aligned and parallel with keel. No play was found in cutlass bearing and very little in the rudder. These findings are considered normal. Strut appeared well attached to hull with no movement detected. Marinetech Inc., Page 6 of 23 6 Propeller is a 3-blade and made out of bronze together with struts. The shaft is made of stainless steel. No damage was noted with these items. Photo 4. Stainless strip on rub rail is slightly separated from rail and lose. ROUTINE FINDING RECOMMENDATION Slight separation of stainless strip from rub rail. Fasten. PREVENTIVE FINDING RECOMMENDATION Rudder core is moist and de-laminated from rudder skins. Replace rudder.
9 DISCUSSION: This rudder has a full skeg with upper and lower bearings that are attached to the stainless rudderpost. There is a grid of stainless ribs inside the rudder that are welded onto the rudderpost. For this reason it is unlikely for the rudder to completely come apart from metal frame and post. However, it is possible for parts of the rudder to fail and come lose in heavy weather since it appears de-laminated based on percussion testing. FACT: A delaminated rudder does not posses the original design strength of a laminated rudder. OPINION: The rudder should be restored to original design strength by replacing. Loss of ability to steer in heavy weather could be catastrophic. Replacement is therefore advisable. Marinetech Inc., Page 7 of 23 7 Photo 5. Hull identification number. VII. DECK, HELM, CANVAS AND GROUND TACKLE The decks are constructed of FRP and cored.
10 Deck is then covered with teak decking which is screwed on to deck. Moisture measurements with Electro Physics GRP-33 moisture meter revealed moisture in about 50% of decking. Moisture seems to have intruded from missing bungs in teak deck and bare screws. Deck feels solid and rigid with no flexing noted. PREVENTIVE FINDING RECOMMENDATION Moist readings on approximately 50% of deck area. Remove all teak deck and take moisture measurements on fiberglass to see if moisture has intruded into core. DISCUSSION: Moisture always seems to penetrate teak decks that have been screwed into the deck fiberglass. Teak decks are therefore no longer screwed in place, they are epoxied on new construction. Unfortunately, moisture often finds its way into the deck core underneath the fiberglass.
