IDENTIFICATION OF MATERIAL Identity: Classified Fly Ash or Unclassified Fly Ash Alternative names: Pulverised Fuel Ash, PFA, Fly Ash Appearance: Fine , grey powder Manufacturer: Ulula Ash (Pty) Ltd Plot 4, Kyasand Johannesburg, South Africa Contact numbers: 011 708-0010 (+27 11 708-0010) 084 500-5566 (+27 84 500-5566) 2. COMPOSISTION Chemical Name/Composition: Alumina - Silicates consisting mainly of SiO AL O CaO Fe O 3. HAZARDOUS IDENTITY data Appearance: Fly Ash is a fine grey odourless power.
In the presence of air movement it will cause dust. Health effects: Fly Ash mixed with water produces a strong alkaline solution. This can cause irritation and burns to the skin and eyes. Skin contact: Fly Ash may cause dry skin and irritation. Eye contact: Airborne dust may cause irritation or inflammation. Inhalation: Dust may cause nose, throat or lung irritation. Ingestion: Small quantities of ingestion are not known to be harmful. 4. FIRST AID MEASURES Skin contact: Fly Ash may cause dry skin and irritation. Wash affected area with soap and water. Eye contact: Wash with large amounts of water and seek medical attention if irritation remains.
Inhalation: Move affected person to fresh air. If nose or airways become inflamed, seek medical attention. Ingestion: Small quantities of ingestion are not known to be harmful. 5. FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARD data Flash Point: Non Flammable / Non Explosive Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazards: None Flammable (Explosive Limits % Vol.): Not Applicable Special Fire Fighting Procedures: None 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES Methods of cleaning: Recover spillage and place into a container or bag. Spray fly ash with water for easy handling and to minimize airborne dust. Wear appropriate protective clothing as described in Section 3.
Environmental precautions: Prevent fly ash from contaminating surface water. Do not allow the fly ash to enter the water course or dams. 2008/005640/07 ULULA ASH(Pty)Ltd Directors: Billett, , A. Thedvall 7. HANDLING AND STORAGE Handling: Avoid actions that can cause the ash to become airborne. Handling equipment should be closed to prevent dusting and spillage. Storage: Storage should be in bags, containers or bulk silos. Engulfment hazard: To prevent burial or suffocation, do not enter a confined space such as a silo, bin, bulk truck or vessel that stores fly ash.
Fly Ash can buildup or adhere to the wall of a confined space. 8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS AND PERSONAL PROTECTION Skin protection: Wear gloves or a barrier cream for prolonged exposure to fly ash. Eye contact: Suitable goggles to be worn if there is a risk of the powder suddenly becoming airborne during handling. Respiratory protection: Wear suitable dust masks for prolonged exposure to airborne fly ash. Ingestion: Small quantities of ingestion are not known to be harmful. Protection: The following is recommended to be used when handling fly ash. 9. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Appearance & Odour: Fine, grey powder, Odourless Vapour Density: Not Applicable Solubility in water: Slightly (<2%) Boiling Point: Not Applicable Freezing Point: Not Applicable Specific Gravity: Odour Threshold: Not Applicable Melting Point: 1350 Deg C Vapour Pressure: (mm Mercury ): Not Applicable pH: >8 in water 10.
STABILITY AND REACTIVITY Stability: Stable under normal room temperature and conditions Reactivity: Fly Ash will form lumps with long term exposure to moisture. (water) 11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION No toxicological disease or condition reported to date. 12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION The addition of fly ash to water will give an alkaline solution. Do not allow into the watercourse or drains. 13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS Disposal to suitable landfill sites which would normally accept building rubble . Disposal onto existing Eskom fly ash dumps with prior arrangements to be made.
