1 Materials Genome Initiative Strategic PLAN A report by the SUBCOMMITTEE ON THE Materials Genome Initiative COMMITTEE ON TECHNOLOGY of the NATIONAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL November 2021 Materials Genome Initiative Strategic PLAN About the National Science and Technology Council The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) is the principal means by which the Executive Branch coordinates science and technology policy across the diverse entities that make up the Federal research and development enterprise. A primary objective of the NSTC is to ensure that science and technology policy decisions and programs are consistent with the President's stated goals.

2 The NSTC prepares research and development strategies that are coordinated across Federal agencies aimed at accomplishing multiple national goals. The work of the NSTC is organized under committees that oversee subcommittees and working groups focused on different aspects of science and technology. More information is available at About the Office of Science and Technology Policy The Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) was established by the National Science and Technology Policy, Organization, and Priorities Act of 1976 to provide the President and others within the Executive Office of the President with advice on the scientific, engineering, and technological aspects of the economy, national security, homeland security, health, foreign relations, the environment, and the technological recovery and use of resources, among other topics.

3 OSTP leads interagency science and technology policy coordination efforts, assists the Office of Management and Budget with an annual review and analysis of Federal research and development in budgets, and serves as a source of scientific and technological analysis and judgment for the President with respect to major policies, plans, and programs of the Federal Government. More information is available at About the NSTC Subcommittee on the Materials Genome Initiative The Subcommittee on the Materials Genome Initiative (SMGI) defines and coordinates Federal efforts in support of the goals of the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) and identifies policies that will accelerate deployment of advanced Materials .

4 SMGI also tracks national priority needs that would benefit from MGI, identifies extramural activities that connect to MGI goals, and explores ways the Federal Government can advance the development of the Materials Innovation Infrastructure. More information is available at About this Document The Materials Genome Initiative was launched in 2011 to accelerate the discovery, design, development, and deployment of new Materials , at a fraction of the cost, by harnessing the power of data and computational tools in concert with experiment. The 2021 Materials Genome Initiative Strategic Plan updates and replaces the previous Strategic plan released December 2014, and reflects the significant advances that have been made over the past ten years.

5 This document provides a vision to align the MGI community across the continuum from research and development through deployment, and identifies goals for the next five years with objectives and actions to be taken by the community to advance the MGI.
