5 If you like, you can also hire a Segway for a fun way of seeing everything the Island has to offer. History Couran was always the name of this part of South Stradbroke Island. To the Kombamerri people who lived as nomads on Stradbroke and parts of the mainland, it means the tree we call Moreton Bay ash. In other local Aboriginal languages, Couran means 'dugong skirt' (or steak) or 'eldest brother'. The first European surveyors transcribed the name as Cooran before settling on the now familiar spelling and calling the area Couran Cove. Olympian Ron Clarke assembled a team of experts to build Couran Cove Island Resort.
