Division of Teacher Education, meiji School of Oriental Medicine ABSTRACT. Objective: We surveyed the literature on the pathology, treatment, and prevention of elbow damage (termed baseball elbow ), a characteristic sports injury among baseball players, and investigated the role of sports acupuncture and moxibustion as possible treatment for managing baseball elbow. Methods: We searched the Japanese medical database Ichushi-Web using the keywords elbow, elbow joint, sports injury, adolescence, growth period, and baseball.

9 Additional searches were conducted using the following keywords: acupuncture, moxibustion, acupuncture and moxibustion, and electric acupuncture. Articles related to acupuncture and moxibustion relevant to adolescent elbow pain were searched in PubMed by using the following keywords: elbow pain, baseball elbow, little leaguer's elbow, acupuncture, and electric acupuncture. The searches spanned the 10-year period from 2003. through 2012. Results: There were 39 search results from Ichushi-Web; of these, 32 articles in which back referencing revealed conditions other than adolescent baseball elbow were excluded. Ichushi-Web and PubMed searches did not yield articles relevant to acupuncture and moxibustion.

10 Discussion: The injury rate of baseball elbow in adolescence is high, with the medial type being the most common. If this condition is not treated before it reaches an advanced stage, the time required for players to return to baseball increases, thus indicating that prevention is important. In the early stages of medial type of baseball elbow injuries, acupuncture and moxibustion treatments can be used; however, in advanced stages, surgical treatment must be considered. In acupuncture and moxibustion treatment, it is important not only to treat the local area but also to combine this with systemic conditioning. Besides acupuncture and moxibustion, an appropriate choice of treatment and a practitioner capable of offering comprehensive treatment are both necessary and important.
