Description Water dilutable soluble oil, semi-synthetic and synthetic METALWORKING fluids are highly susceptible to the growth of microorganisms. Microbial contamination can result in slime generation, gas formation, malodors and the reduction or drift of pH in the FLUID concentrate and the working dilution. This contamination can diminish FLUID performance and system efficiency, which can increase costs, decrease tool life, reduce productivity, and cause machine shut down.

Formulating Mergal 174, at appropriate use levels in both laboratory and field evaluations, inhibits the growth of microorganisms. Furthermore, products protected with Mergal 174 can generally resist long term Considerations repeated challenge by microorganisms.
5 When used in METALWORKING FLUID concentrates and working dilutions at application use levels of . (1000 - 3000 ppm), based on the weight of the working dilution, Mergal 174 will protect against a broad range of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. The level of Mergal 174 required for optimum effectiveness is dependant on the composition and end use application of your specific product formulation. Regulatory Toxicity Considerations Acute Oral Effects: LD50 (oral, rat-male)-1620 mg/kg; LD50 (oral, rat-female)-1956 mg/kg Acute Skin Effects: LD50 (dermal, rabbit) >2000 mg/kg.
6 In an acute dermal irritation study all treated sites were normal at 24 hours. (Irritation score ). Acute Eye Effects: Severe irritation and corrosive (rabbit). Corneal damage may be irreversible if not washed from eyes promptly Acute Inhalation Effects: LC50 (rat, 4 hr)-620 mg/m3. Subchronic Effects and Other Studies 13 week dermal toxicity (rats) Groups of 10 male and 10 female Sprague-Dawley rats were dosed daily for 13 weeks via the dermal route at doses of 0, 50, 250, and 1000 mg/kg/day. Overall, no treatment effects or systemic toxicity were seen at each dose.
7 Teratogenicity (rats) Groups of 25 Sprague-Dawley rate were dosed daily via gavage from day 6-16. inclusive of gestation, at dosages of 0, 100, 250, and 500 mg/kg/day. No effect was seen on the dam or conceptus at dose levels of up to 250 mg/kg/day. Mutagenicity testing (mice) Micronucleus test in bone marrow; this product does not cause the production of micronuclei in the bone marrow of male and female CD-1 mice. Unscheduled DNA Synthesis This product is not genotoxic; it does not cause unscheduled DNA. synthesis in rat hepatocytes.

LC50 (daphnia, 48 hr) = mg/L. LC50 (quail, via water) >5200 ppm LD50 (quail, oral) = 713 mg/kg Environmental Fate This product is degradable (pKa = (25 C)). This product is a pesticide and may cause adverse environmental impact. Do not discharge effluent containing this product directly into lakes, streams, ponds, estuaries, oceans, or public waters unless this product is specifically identified and addressed in a NPDES permit.
