1 Military Extension Policies94 Procedures for extensions apply to residents whoare out of their state/pro vince on active automatic extensions are allowed, tworules apply: the license had to be current at thetime of entering service, and proof of active dutymust be carried with the :Mail renewal available to Military per-sonnel and dependents. Photo must be on : Automatic Extension for non-CDLlicense for Military member and spouse valid 90days after discharge or return to the state,whichever occurs first. An Extension card is avail-able to carry with the expired :Automatic Extension valid 180 daysafter discharge, with notification of active dutystatus to MVD prior to license : Extension granted on request; formattaches to expired license.

2 Expires 30 days afterfirst tour or release from active duty (maximum 6years).California:Automatic Extension valid 30 daysafter discharge or return to state. A DL 236 mustbe carried with : License automatically extended whencarried with valid Military ID. Form DR 2639,available by mail, extends license 3 years or 90days after return to state, whichever occurs :Automatic Extension valid 30 daysafter honorable discharge or return to state, unlesslicense previously suspended, cancelled, orrevoked. 3 Applies to service member and and online renewal :Automatic Extension for Military person-nel deployed outside of United States; valid 90days after return to United States. Mail renewalalso available. A valid-without-photo licenseissued if photo cannot be retrieved from :No automatic Extension . Active mil-itary personnel and dependents may obtain multi-ple 4-year extensions by mail. (Previously 3-yearextensions.)Illinois:License for Military personnel and depen-dents valid for duration of Military service and 120days thereafter. May obtain deferred expirationlicense or renew by mail. Exten-sion expires 30 days after return to state or dis-charge, whichever occurs :Automatic Extension valid upto 60 days after honorable discharge. May berenewed up to 60 days after discharge withoutretest.

5 Spouses/dependents may renew by :Automatic Extension valid until firstreturn to state or 30 days after discharge. Mailrenewal also :Automatic Extension valid up to oneyear after separation or discharge from active ser-vice. Must present license and discharge applies to spouses who don t reside in thestate during the active Military service :Mail renewal available; licenseemust submit Military orders, copy of Military ID,letter from commanding officer, and other :No automatic Extension . Military per-sonnel and their dependents may renew by mail ifout of state. Upon discharge, resident has 6months or 90 days from reestablishing residencyMilitary Extension Policies95in Missouri, whichever occurs first, to apply forrenewal without reexamination (no Extension ofdriving privileges beyond original expiration date).

6 Montana: 30-day Extension after honorable dis-charge with proof of active duty. Renewal by mail also :Automatic Extension for duration ofservice of Military personnel and their spouse andfor 60 days from and after return to :No automatic Extension . Renewal bymail available (previous photo is used). May berenewed up to 6 months after discharge : Automatic Extension valid duringactive duty and up to 45 days following dischargeor return to state. 8 Militarypersonnel may apply for a Special Operator sLicense valid until 30 days after discharge. Theregular license is Carolina:Automatic Extension validduring active duty and up to 60 days followingdischarge or return to state. Also valid for spouseand Dakota:Automatic Extension valid dur-ing active duty and 30 days after discharge orreturn to state. Dependents may be eligible torenew by mail or : Automatic Extension valid duringactive duty and 60 days after honorable dis-charge or return to state. Can request license withcon di tion code 30. Expiration field shows 00 0000 and license expires 60 days after honorabledischarge or reassignment to state.

9 Nonphotolicense also available to Military personnel anddependents with proper :Automatic Extension valid during activeduty and 90 days after honorable discharge orreturn to state. May receive photo or NON-PHOTO renewal by :Automatic Extension valid up to 90 daysafter discharge, if on active duty and stationed outof :Automatic Extension up to 4 years or30 days after discharge, whichever occurs renewal also :A one-time Extension may be grantedon request. License expires 180 days after returnto state or 3 years from expiration date, whicheveroccurs first. Spouses and dependents also :Automatic Extension , also avail-able to spouses and dependents, ex pires 90 daysafter Virginia:Automatic Extension valid 6months after honorable discharge.

10 Wisconsin: Military personnel may request anextension valid 30 days after licensee returns tostate or 90 days after discharge, whichever occursfirst. Mail renewal avail able but not :Statement appears on back of licenseindicating that license expiration date is waivedwhen accompanied by an active duty Military IDcard. Mail renewal available but not Provinces:No automatic ex ten -sions. Some provinces permit renewal by mail,and some issue a valid without photo licensevalid for a limited period.
