The requirement was for an OS/2 PM program which would actively monitor a number of remote Queue Managers and give visual and audible feedback if a problem was detected.

7 At the time I was interested in gaining experience of auto (Programmable Command Format) messages. Since the program already had the basic structure required I decided to add command support to it allowing you to issue virtually any MQ command against any number of Queue Managers in a dialog. For many years the program was enhanced in my spare time and released as SupportPac MO71. In October 2012, after working at IBM for 28 years on product development, I decided to leave IBM to pursue a different career writing tools and utilities for IBM. MQ. To that end I founded MQGem Software ( ). IBM agreed that it was in customers best interests for the program to continue to be developed and in August 2013 IBM agreed to let me continue my work on MO71. Future support and development of the program will therefore be made by MQGem Software and all support questions should be directed to Since 2013 we have extended MO71 greatly and added many features which were not feasible to do when it was just a spare time activity.

8 We hope you enjoy the product and agree with us that is makes many MQ tasks much simpler and easier. Of course I could not have written such a program without help from a variety of people. My thanks go to Morag Hughson for considerable assistance with this manual, for numerous usability suggestions, for keeping me sane when nothing ever seems to go right, as well as tirelessly testing many buggy versions of the program! When I first wrote the program there were few alternatives to MQSC for Queue Manager Administration but now there are a number of solutions available.

9 We will continue enhancing the program while ever our customers tell us it is useful to them. xiii IBM MQ administrator Main changes from previous version Unless otherwise stated the behaviour of the previous version should be maintained and, if all goes well, enhanced. While every effort is made to try and ensure that there are as few bugs as possible it would be surprising if some problems didn't leak out. We would recommend that users keep their previous version of MO71 handy so that they can revert to it if a bug is found. Needless to say, please report any incompatibilities to us if they are found and we will do our best to provide a fix. The full list of changes are: 1. Column Filters additions Version introduces the notion of column filters. In this release additions have been made to Column Filters to improve their usefulness. In particular integer fields are now available in the selection list making it easy to see when you have a few distinct values.

Splash Screens It is now possible to configure MO71 to display a splash screen upon start-up and when connecting to a Queue Manager for the first time. For more information please see Chapter Splash Screens on page 87. 3. MO71 Program update notification It is always recommended that you run the latest version of MO71 and get the benefit of new features. To make this easier MO71 will now check whether there is a new version and display a dialog to you. 4. IBM MQ Maintenance notification When managing an MQ estate it can be difficult to keep track of the IBM MQ Maintenance level availability, such as fix packs, and which Queue Managers they have been installed on. MO71 now makes this easy by displaying this information in the Queue Manager List Dialog, the main Window and the Network view. For more information please see Chapter MQ.
