Refer to engine components in figure . refer to part/action in your engine Model , Type and Code numbershere for future your date of purchase here for future InformationEngine Power Rating InformationThe gross power rating for individual gas enginemodels is labeled in accordance with SAE (Society ofAutomotive Engineers) code J1940 (Small EnginePower & Torque Rating Procedure), and ratingperformance has been obtained and corrected inaccordance with SAE J1995 (Revision 2002-05).Torque values are derived at 3060 RPM; horsepowervalues are derived at 3600 RPM. Actual gross enginepower will be lower and is affected by, among otherthings, ambient operating conditions and engine-to-engine variability. Given both the wide array ofproducts on which engines are placed and thevariety of environmental issues applicable tooperating the equipment, the gas engine will notdevelop the rated gross power when used in a givenpiece of power equipment (actual on-site" or netpower).

This difference is due to a variety of factorsincluding, but not limited to, accessories (air cleaner, exhaust, charging, cooling, carburetor, fuel pump, etc.), application limitations, ambient operatingconditions (temperature, humidity, altitude), andengine-to-engine variability. Due to manufacturingand capacity limitations, Briggs & Stratton maysubstitute an engine of higher rated power for thisSeries Components (see fig. )1 EngineModelTypeCodexxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxx2 Carburetor3 Primer bulb4 Air cleaner (flat)5 Fuel shut-off, if equipped6 Fuel fill7 Fuel tank8 Finger guard9 Oil fill/Dipstick10 Muffler/spark arrester, if equipped11 Muffler guard12 Resistor spark plug13 Rope handleHazard Symbols and MeaningsExplosionToxic FumesMoving PartsShockHot SurfaceKickbackFireInternational Symbols and MeaningsOn OffFuel ShutoffRead Owner sManualStopFuelChokeSafety AlertOilSafety Precautions* Briggs & Stratton does not necessarily know whatequipment this engine will power.

For that reason, you should carefully read and understand theoperating instructions for the equipment on whichyour engine is OPERATING ENGINE Read entire Operating & Maintenance InstructionsAND the instructions for the equipment this enginepowers.* Failure to follow instructions could result in seriousinjury or OPERATING & MAINTENANCEINSTRUCTIONS CONTAIN SAFETYINFORMATION TO Make you aware of hazards associated with engines Inform you of the risk of injury associated with thosehazards, and Tell you how to avoid or reduce the risk of safety alert symbol is used to identify safetyinformation about hazards that can result in personal signal word (DANGER, WARNING, or CAUTION) is usedwith the alert symbol to indicate the likelihood and the potentialseverity of injury. In addition, a hazard symbol may be used torepresent the type of indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, might result in minor or moderate , when used without the alert symbol, indicates a situation that could result in damage tothe engine exhaust from this product containschemicals known to the State of California to causecancer, birth defects, or other reproductive and its vapors are extremely flammableand or explosion can cause severe burns or ADDING FUEL Turn engine OFF and let engine cool at least 2minutes before removing gas cap.

Fill fuel tank outdoors or in well-ventilated area. Do not overfill fuel tank. Fill tank to approximately1-1/2 inches below top of neck to allow for fuelexpansion. Keep gasoline away from sparks, open flames, pilotlights, heat, and other ignition sources. Check fuel lines, tank, cap, and fittings frequentlyfor cracks or leaks. Replace if STARTING ENGINE Make sure spark plug, muffler, fuel cap and aircleaner are in place. Do not crank engine with spark plug removed. If fuel spills, wait until it evaporates before startingengine. If engine floods, set choke to OPEN/RUN position, place throttle in FAST and crank until engine OPERATING EQUIPMENT Do not tip engine or equipment at angle whichcauses gasoline to spill. Do not choke carburetor to stop TRANSPORTING EQUIPMENT Transport with fuel tank EMPTY or with fuel shut-offvalve STORING GASOLINE OR EQUIPMENT WITHFUEL IN TANK Store away from furnaces, stoves, water heaters orother appliances that have pilot light or other ignitionsource because they can ignite gasoline engine creates can ignite nearby flammable and fire could result.

If there is natural or LP gas leakage in area, do notstart engine. Do not use pressurized starting fluids becausevapors are sparking can result in fire or start-up can result in entanglement, traumatic amputation, or PERFORMING ADJUSTMENTS OR RE-PAIRS Disconnect spark plug wire and keep it away fromspark plug. Disconnect battery at negative terminal (onlyengines with electric start).WHEN TESTING FOR SPARK Use approved spark plug tester. Do not check for spark with spark plug give off carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless, poison carbon monoxide can cause nausea, fainting or death. Start and run engine outdoors. Do not start or run engine in enclosed area, even ifdoors or windows are engines produce heat. Engine parts, especially muffler, become extremely thermal burns can occur on debris, such as leaves, grass, brush, etc. can catch fire. Allow muffler, engine cylinder and fins to cool beforetouching.

Remove accumulated combustibles from mufflerarea and cylinder area. Install and maintain in working order a sparkarrester before using equipment on forest-covered,grass-covered, brush-covered unimproved state of California requires this (Section 4442 ofthe California Public Resources Code). Otherstates may have similar laws. Federal laws apply onfederal parts can contact or entangle hands, feet, hair, clothing, or amputation or severe laceration canresult. Operate equipment with guards in place. Keep hands and feet away from rotating parts. Tie up long hair and remove jewelry. Do not wear loose-fitting clothing, danglingdrawstrings or items that could become retraction of starter cord (kickback) will pull handand arm toward engine faster than you can let bones, fractures, bruises or sprains couldresult. When starting engine, pull cord slowly untilresistance is felt, then pull rapidly. Remove all external equipment/engine loadsbefore starting engine.

Direct coupled equipment components such as, butnot limited to, blades, impellors, pulleys, sprockets, etc., must be securely Recommendations (see fig. )Engine shipped from Briggs & Stratton without starting engine, fill with oil. Do not a high quality detergent oil classified For ServiceSF, SG, SH, SJ" or higher such as Briggs & Stratton30W, Part Number 100005. Use no special additiveswith recommended oils. Do not mix oil with the SAE viscosity grade of oil from this chartthat matches the starting temperature anticipatedbefore the next oil :Synthetic oil meeting ILSACGF-2, API certification mark and API ser-vice symbol (shown at left) with SJ/CFENERGY CONSERVING" or higher, is anacceptable oil at all temperatures. Use ofsynthetic oil does not alter required oilchange intervals.*Air cooled engines run hotter than automotiveengines. The use of non-synthetic multi-viscosityoils (5W-30, 10W-30, etc.)in temperatures above40 F (4 C) will result in higher than normal oilconsumption.

When using a multi-viscosity oil, check oil level more frequently.**SAE 30 oil, if used below 40 F (4 C), will resultin hard starting and possible engine bore dam-age due to inadequate oil level. (Oil capacity is about 20 oz. or liters.)Place engine level and clean around oil fill .Remove dipstick, wipe with clean cloth , insert andtighten down again. Remove dipstick and check oillevel. Oil should be at FULL mark .If oil is required, add slowly. Tighten dipstick firmlybefore starting not overfill. Overfilling with oil may cause:1. Smoking,2. Hard starting,3. Spark plug fouling,4. Oil saturation of air filterFuel RecommendationsUse clean, fresh, lead-free, regular gasoline with aminimum of 77 octane. Leaded gasoline may be used ifit is commercially available and if unleaded is unavail-able. Purchase fuel in quantity that can be used within30 days. See storage leaded gasoline may not be used. Somefuels, called oxygenated or reformulated gasolines, aregasolines blended with alcohols or ethers.

Excessiveamounts of these blends can damage the fuel systemor cause performance problems. If any undesirableoperating symptoms occur, use gasoline with a lowerpercentage of alcohol or engine is certified to operate on gasoline. ExhaustEmission control System: EM (Engine Modifications).Do not use gasoline which contains Methanol. Do notmix oil with engine protection, we recommend using Briggs &Stratton Fuel Stabilizer available from an AuthorizedBriggs & Stratton Service fuel refueling, allowengine to cool 2 around fuel fill before removing cap to refuel. Filltank to approximately 1-1/2 inches below top of neck toallow for fuel expansion. Be careful not to Starting (see fig. )ALWAYS KEEP HANDS AND FEETCLEAR OF EQUIPMENT MOVING not use a pressurized startingfluid. Vapors are , store and fuel equipment in level oil fuel shut-off valve 1/4 turn counterclockwise , equipped engineMove throttle control to FAST position.
