1 1 MOTHER MONROE Every-Name Index by William T. Thornton, Fulton, MS October 2006 he excellent collection of articles entitled MOTHER MONROE by Dr. Evans including PIONEER TIMES IN MONROE County by Wilkes and WHO S WHO IN MONROE County CEMETERIES by Dr. Evans is an invaluable source of information for genealogy research into families from MONROE County , Mississippi. The articles, which originally appeared in the Aberdeen Examiner, 1936 1938, were republished by MOTHER MONROE Publishing Company in 1979. At the time of the republication of these newspaper articles, two indexes were prepared: a surname Index and a topical Index .

2 While the topical Index is wonderful for quickly finding places and events, the surname Index is just that, a list of the surnames and the page numbers on which that surname appears. No where in my volume of MOTHER MONROE is found a complete list of names. Over the past several months as I have read and used MOTHER MONROE , I have been slowly adding all of the complete names from each page into an Index format. That Every-Name Index is presented here with the hope that it will help other researchers with their work on MONROE County , Mississippi. My Index was prepared from a copy of MOTHER MONROE which I purchased in the 1980s.

3 It is worn from use and stained from water damage; some of the pages were difficult to read. Further, my Index has not been edited nor proofed against the original copies of the articles which I understand are available at the Evans Memorial Library in Aberdeen, Mississippi. My Index is expanded so that an individual s military affiliation is a free-standing entry [and you will notice that some of the individuals were in three or more different units during the Civil War]. Spelling changes are noted within the Index but, for the most part, I tried to follow the spelling in the original.

4 Researchers are cautioned to read MOTHER MONROE for themselves and if searching for military associations, I suggest one go directly to the muster rolls for a complete listing of names. There were many obvious errors in spelling and in the type-setting of the original copy; the group that republished the articles in 1979 states that we have not corrected errors in the original publication nor have we corrected archaic spelling. It is difficult to type misspelled words and it was difficult to make my computer stop the auto-correction features that seem to take over at times.
