Over the years, a total of 2,393 men and women have officiated at the State Finals. In order to work a State Final, the official must have achieved Certified status in that SPORT . Certified status is the highest rating level in a given SPORT . When an official begins in a SPORT the official is at the Registered level. After a minimum of two (2) calendar years working at Registered status, an official is eligible to advance to the second (Recognized) level. Then, as early as two (2) calendar years after becoming Recognized, the individual is eligible to advance to the third (Certified) level. Only Certified OFFICIALS are appointed by the IHSA Office to officiate at the State Finals. Only one official has worked five (5) different state finals.

Wright of Champaign in Boys Football, Boys Basketball and Boys Baseball Some OFFICIALS worked two Boys state series (Basketball and Baseball) and also officiated Football, but did not work Football because the playoff series was not implemented until 1974. The number of three-tournament OFFICIALS would be greater because of it. In a number of the Boys state series, an official will work a maximum of three State Finals in a given SPORT . This policy was implemented in the 1960's, and is designed to allow for a greater number of rated OFFICIALS to be appointed to officiate at the highest level of competition in the SPORT (s). OFFICIALS are rated by the coaches of the teams participating in each state series and their appointments by the IHSA Office are based upon their ratings in that (and each) given year.

8 Several outstanding OFFICIALS worked numerous State Finals in a given SPORT prior to the institution of the three-appearance limit. Shelby Himes of Urbana started eight Boys Cross Country final races and served as starter at the Boys State Track Meet in Champaign for 21 straight years beginning in 1938. Margaret Kelso of Dolton was referee of the Girls State Track Meet for 11 straight years. Gene Lash of Danville worked the Boys Baseball Tournament 12 times, while Joe Przada of East St. Louis worked Boys Baseball nine times, and W. Burdell Smith of Lowpoint 10 times. Fred (Brick) Young worked Boys Basketball 12 times in a row beginning in 1918. In addition, Jerry Grunska of Deerfield worked three Football playoff title games (1974-75-78) and judged in the 1980-81 school year at the Individual Events State Final Speech Contest. One set of brothers has worked two different State Finals each. Frank DeVrieze of Moline has worked three Girls Basketball and two Girls Softball State Finals, as has Robert of Milan.

9 The Foerch brothers have worked several Boys Gymnastics State Finals. Following in the footsteps of their father Richard (who worked seven times) are Brad, Doug and Steven. Note: R-S behind a year in track, cross country and swimming stands for referee-starter. In baseball and softball, the letter behind a given name represents the position worked in the title game. In football the classification of the title game worked follows the year. The A, AA, 1A/2A or 3A/4A following a year in the other sports indicates the class of the State Final worked. *Indicates the official worked the championship game or match. COO indicates COO and UIC indicates UIC.
