2 #HurricaneStrong is designed to increase public safety and reduce economic losses by motivating individuals and families to undertake Hurricane preparedness and mitigation activities. The public messaging is delivered through signature National efforts, including the White House observance of National Hurricane Preparedness Week, the NOAA/ National Hurricane Center Hurricane Awareness Tour (HAT), and FEMA s National Preparedness Month. The messaging is reinforced by traditional and social media as well as dozens of community and corporate special events, expositions, employee trainings, and home improvement store workshops.#HurricaneStrong targets audiences at all levels with a message of empowerment, and a symbolic pose . Similar to a Heisman Trophy stance, the #HurricaneStrong pose is the campaign call to arms to demonstrate support for Hurricane Resilience , and to acknowledge five steps necessary to achieve a prepared state before hurricanes strike:Personal Safety - Know your evacuation zone Financial Security - Have an insurance check-up Family Preparedness - Build a disaster supply kit Damage Prevention - Strengthen your home Community Service - Help your neighbor #HurricaneStrong messaging commenced on Sunday, May 15 with a White House proclamation of Nation-al Hurricane Preparedness Week, and The Home Depot hosted 695 #HurricaneStrong workshops in stores from Maine to Texas in honor of the proclamation.

3 News outlets immediately took up the charge, and social media focused on the hashtag with related following week, Air Force pilots, NOAA s Aircraft Operations Center, and teams of outreach volunteers led by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and National Weather Service took to the skies for the 2016 NOAA Hurricane Awareness Tour with stops in San Antonio, Galveston, New Orleans, Mobile, and Naples. BASF, FLASH, Huber Engineered Woods, Portland Cement Association, Simpson Strong-Tie, State Farm, The Home Depot, and USAA became official NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassadors, inspiring new private sector support for the cause of weather safety and Resilience overall. The strategy to take the case for Hurricane Resilience to the American public through #HurricaneStrong met with resounding success in 2016, and generated widespread traditional and social media outcomes.

6 Obama Administration Announces Public and Private Sector Efforts to Increase Community Resilience through Building Codes and StandardsBuilding codes set the baseline for the safe design and construction of our homes, schools, and workplaces, providing the minimum requirements to adequately safeguard the health, safety and welfare of building occupants. The impacts of climate change including hotter temperatures, more extreme weather, sea level rise, and more severe drought pose significant challenges for buildings and homes, many of which were not built to withstand the future impacts of climate change.
