It has continued to meet its objective of achieving greater uniformity in Steelwork contractspecifications and is recognised as a document that can be incorporated readily into contractdocumentation to specify acceptable standards for the fabrication and erection of steelworkstructures for is intended that this Specification should be invoked as part of the individual Project Specificationand thus be part of the total Building contract.

6 It is essential that the Steelwork Contractor receives,on time, all information necessary to carry out the contract. With this in mind, Section 1, which givesguidance on the items and information that should be included in the Project Specification , isarranged to make its purpose more apparent. It is recognised that if the structure is unorthodox itmay be appropriate to qualify and/or enlarge upon the provisions of this Specification ; someguidance on such matters is given in the Commentary which is available is considered that this Specification can be incorporated within the forms of contract normallyemployed in the steel construction the steel construction industry operates to the requirements of British Standards andincreasingly to European Standards adopted as British Standards, and it is appropriate that all thesestandards are now referred to as British Standards.

7 The British Constructional SteelworkAssociation Ltd and the Steel Construction Institute take a most active part in the preparation ofthese documents. Much of the information noted in this Specification is based upon that given inthese standards, but it must not be inferred that the full details of the standards are is taken of the fact that information is increasingly exchanged in electronic form and theadoption of standard forms of Steelwork connections allows the review of Structural details to procedures for weld inspection are introduced; tables for weld inspection and acceptancecriteria, suitable for most welding generally used in Steelwork Building construction, are placed in anannex to the Specification . In Section 5 note is made that the Engineer should check that anyadditional project-specific requirements for non-destructive testing of welds are defined in theProject to British Standards (issued with BS, BS EN, BS EN ISO or BS ISO references) havebeen updated throughout the vertical line on the left of the page indicates a change to the text of the 4th Edition.

8 This verticalline has not been used where only clause renumbering or editorial corrections were parties are reminded that under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994they have a duty to cooperate with others involved with construction of The Works to demonstratecompliance with Health and Safety legislation. Compliance with this Specification will make that is drawn to Section 11 which requires that Steelwork Contractors should have all thenecessary facilities, skills and effective quality management to ensure that their services andproducts conform to this Specification . It stipulates that the quality management system shall beopen to assessment by the Employer or be certified by an approved certification body for compliancewith BS EN ISO 9001: NSSS 5 v2 FINAL 19/1/07 11:30 Page 4 National Structural Steelwork Specification - 5th Edition5It is intended to continue to update this Specification at regular intervals.
