2 The Bureau works with customers throughout the project delivery process (from concept development through construction) to ensure that adverse impacts to the environment are avoided, minimized or mitigated; and that appropriate documentation is prepared for regulatory agencies. In addition, the Bureau assists the Metropolitan Planning Organizations in screening and selecting projects for various NJDOT/FHWA grant offer career - minded individuals the opportunity to become progressively knowledgeable about applicable environmental laws, regulations, policies and practices; learn compliance strategies; and participate in project delivery teams comprised of individuals from many other units in NJDOT, municipal and county engineers, consultants, MPO's, FHWA, and other regulatory agencies. Unit DescriptionThe Environmental Services and Support Unit (ESSU) is responsible for advising and supporting functions of Transportation Operations Systems & Support (TOS&S) ensuring compliance with various applicable state and federal environmental regulations.

3 These services include: managing historic hazardous substance discharges; obtaining federal and/or state environmental approvals/permits for projects initiated by TOS&S; responding to emergent hazardous material discharges; and conducting compliance include but are not limited to: Assisting with all activities required to obtain federal and state environmental permits/approvals for assigned projects (including conducting field testing/investigations, and analysis/interpretation of field and laboratory data), identifying environmental constraints and/or environmental impacts. Learning to prepare project related documents (technical memoranda and reports, NEPA and Section 4(f) documents, EO215 reviews, etc.) and correspondence for internal and external (review agencies and others) coordination. Assisting in the development of alternatives that will avoid or minimize impacts to the environment and the identification of appropriate mitigation. Assisting in the development of Environmental Plans and Specifications and the review of permit applications.
