Transcription of NOMEX DATA SHEET - DuPont
NOMEX Type 414 is designed for applicationsrequiring a strong, yet flexible andconformable SHEET . It is electrically andthermally similar to NOMEX Type 410, but is calendered under different conditions toprovide its unique properties. NOMEX Type414 is produced in five thicknesses ( to mm) ( to 15 mil), with a density to NOMEX Type 414 was designedfor use as slot insulation in hand-woundmotors and for linear wrapping of wire, but is also used in other applications where itsspecific characteristics are desirable, such asfolded or punched parts. Another example isits use as SHEET insulation in fluid-filled transformer applications due to its improvedimpregnability versus NOMEX Type note:The properties in this data SHEET aretypical, or average values and shouldnot be used as specification otherwise noted, all propertieswere measured in air under standard conditions (in equilibrium at 23 C, 50%relative humidity). Note that, like otherproducts of papermaking technology, NOMEX papers have somewhatdifferent properties in the papermakingmachine direction (MD) compared to the cross direction (XD).
In someapplications (for example, motor slotliners), it is necessary to orient thepaper in the optimum direction to obtainits maximum potential propertiesThe typical electrical property values forNOMEX Type 414 paper are shown in Table AC Rapid Rise dielectric strength data ofTable I, representing voltage stress levels, withstood 10 to 20 seconds at a frequency of60 Hz. These values differ from long-termstrength potential. DuPont recommends thatcontinuous stresses in transformers not kV/mm (40 V/mil) to minimize the risk ofpartial discharges (corona). The Full WaveImpulse dielectric strength data of Table Iwere generated on flat sheets, such as in layerand barrier applications. The geometry of thesystem has an effect on the actual impulsestrength values of the material. The dielectricstrength data are typical values and notrecommended for design purposes. 3 Since NOMEX Type 414 paper is chemically identical toNOMEX Type 410 (differing only in structure),its electrical properties will react similarly totemperature changes up to and including220 C. Variations in frequency up to 104 Hzhave essentially no effect on the dielectricconstant of NOMEX Type 414 paper, anddissipation factors remain below up to these insensitivity of dielectric strength tomoisture (humidity) has already been shownfor NOMEX Type 410 paper in Table II on theNOMEX Type 410 data SHEET . The relativelyminor effects of 8 days exposure at varioushumidities on the dielectric strength and dielec-tricconstant of NOMEX Type 414 mm(10 mil) are shown in Figure 1. data for otherelectrical properties of NOMEX Type 414 mm (10 mil) are shown in Table propertiesThe typical mechanical property values for NOMEX Type 414 paper are shown in Table III. The effects of temperature on tensile strength and elongation areillustrated for NOMEX Type 410 paper in Figure 5 of the NOMEX Type 410 datasheet.
These effects will be similar forNOMEX Type 414 paper. The flexibility ofNOMEX Type 414 is shown by the good fold endurance values in Table III. Thesevalues are at least double the values for the same thickness of NOMEX Type II HUMIDITY EFFECTS ON ELECTRICAL PROPERTIESNOMEX TYPE 414 MM (10 MIL)01020304050607080901001101201300 204060 80100 Figure 1 EFFECT OF HUMIDITY ON ELECTRICAL PROPERTIESNOMEX TYPE 414 MM (10 MIL)Table III TYPICAL MECHANICAL PROPERTIESR elative humidity (%)Oven Dry5096 Dissipation factor1)at 1 Hz (x 10-3)101126 Volume resistivity2)( )1016101510141)ASTM D-150 2)ASTM D-257 Dielectric constant ASTM D-150 Dielectric strength ASTM D-149 Nominal thickness (mil) 7 101215(mm) methodTypical thickness1)(mil) (mm) D-374 Basis weight (g/m2)83176252309398 ASTM D-646 Density (g/cc) strength (N/cm)MD57172229291341 ASTM D-828XD2979119145182 Elongation (%) tear strength2)(N)MD22557391110 ASTM D-1004XD1124384560 Fold endurance(cycles)MDN/A8600770082009200 ASTM D-2176MD = machine direction of paperXD = cross direction of paperDielectric constant (1kHz)Dielectric strength1)
Method D; 17 N/cm22) data presented for Initial Tear strength is listed in the direction of the sampleper ASTM D-1004. The tear is 90 degrees to sample direction hence forpapers with a higher reported MD ITR, the paper will be tougher to tear in thecross humidity, %Percent of room temperature valueWater is a mild plasticizer for NOMEX papers. The effects of 7 days exposure atvarious relative humidities on the tensilestrength and elongation of NOMEX Type 414 mm (10 mil) paper are shownin Table IV. Like elongation, the tear strengthand toughness of the paper are also increasedat higher moisture dimensions of bone-dry NOMEX Type 414paper exposed to 95% conditions willincrease, at most, 1% in the machine directionand 2% in the cross direction (due to moistureabsorption). This swelling is largely reversiblewhen the paper is redried. The rate of changein dimensions will depend, of course, on paperthickness and configuration (for example, individual sheets versus tightly wound rolls).
Variations in environmental humidity willusually produce dimensional changes whichwill be less than 1%. However, even smalldimensional changes, especially if they are non-uniform, can cause or accentuate non-flatness and other problems in criticaloperations. Therefore, NOMEX paperintended for such applications should be keptsealed in its protective polyethylene wrapper,to maintain uniform moisture content, untiljust before propertiesArrhenius plots of thermal aging behavior forNOMEX are exemplified by Figures 7, 8 and 9of the NOMEX Type 410 data SHEET . Similaraging of NOMEX Type 414 paper at elevatedtemperatures has resulted in its recognition asa 220 C insulating stabilityThe compatibility of NOMEX paper andpressboard with virtually all classes of elec-trical varnishes and adhesives (polyimides, silicones, epoxies, polyesters, acrylics, phenolics, synthetic rubbers), as well as other components of electrical equipment, is demonstrated by the many UL-recognizedsystems comprising NOMEX , as well aslongstanding commercial experience.
NOMEX papers are also fully compatible (and incommercial use) with transformer fluids(mineral and silicone oils and other synthetics)and with lubricating oils and refrigerants used in hermetic systems. Common industrialsolvents (alcohols, ketones, acetone, toluene, xylene) have a slight softening and swellingeffect on NOMEX Type 414 paper, similar to that of water. These effects are largelyreversible when the solvent is with NOMEX Type 410, the LimitingOxygen Index (ASTM D-2863) of NOMEX paper NOMEX Type 414 at room temperatureranges between 27 and 32% (depending onthickness and density). Materials with LOIabove (ambient air) will not supportcombustion. Since NOMEX Type 414 paper is identical in composition (and similar instructure) to NOMEX Type 410, its flam-mability characteristics will also be IV HUMIDITY EFFECTS ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIESNOMEX TYPE 414 MM (10 MIL)Relative humidity (%)Oven Dry5096 TensileMD262229214strength (N/cm)1)XD136119111 Elongation1) (%) )ASTM safety information is available upon request.
