1 Notes for Japanese Government ( monbukagakusho : mext ) scholarship (University Recommendation 2015) 1. Outline There are three ways for getting the Japanese Government scholarship : (a) Recommended by a Japanese embassy or consulate general (Embassy Recommendation); (b) Recommended by a Japanese university which will accept you (University Recommendation); and (c) Selected by the Japanese university in which you are currently enrolled if you are a privately-financed student already studying in Japan (Domestic Selection). This document elaborates the procedure for University Recommendation as administered by Yokohama National University (YNU) for recommendation to the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology ( mext ). 2. Application Guideline Please carefully read Japanese Government ( monbukagakusho : mext ) scholarship Application Guideline (University Recommendation 2015).

2 It is a shorter, translated version of the Japanese original application guideline made for your reference. If there is any conflict between this version and the Japanese version, the original Japanese version will prevail. 3. Number of Candidates to be Recommended The maximum number of candidates that each university can recommend to mext is designated, and it is basically 3 in the case of YNU. However, YNU can recommend more than 3 candidates in consideration of the overall situation. Please note in this regard that being recommended by a university does not guarantee that the candidate will win the scholarship . Actual number of scholarships granted (within the quota of 3) vary from year to year, but in a typical year, YNU gets around 3 scholarships under the University Recommendation category. 4. How to Calculate the GPA The applicant is required to have a minimum GPA of or higher.

3 It is calculated by mext s GPA calculation method based on the last two years of applicant s academic record, using the following formula and table (the calculation itself will be done by the academic advisor). Grade Formula: GPA = ((No. of Credits with GP3 * 3) + (No. of Credits with GP2 * 2) + (No. of Credits with GP1 * 1) + (No. of Credits with GP0 * 0))/Total Number of Registered Credits Grade Point Conversion Table: Grade 4 level rating Excellent Good Fair Fail 4 level rating A B C F 4 level rating 100-80 79-70 69-60 59-0 5 level rating S A B C F 5 level rating A B C D F 5 level rating 100-90 89-80 79-70 69-60 59-0 Grade Point (GP) 3 3 2 1 0 5.

4 Application Period The application period for internal screening is as stated below. The applicant is required to contact a prospective academic advisor who he/she wishes to study with and prepare all the necessary documents by the designated date. The documents must be submitted to the International Office through the academic advisor (by bringing in person), and application without an academic advisor s consensus will not be accepted. Application Period: January 13-20 Application Time: 9am-5pm (Except 12pm 1pm) Place to submit: International Office, 1F, Administration Bureau 6. Announcement of the Result The result of internal screening will be notified to the applicant in late February through the academic advisor.
