INfORmATION CAST NumBERS ENGINE NumBERS interior DATA PAINT NumBERS This section is probably the most valuable section in the catalog for the guys restoring a Tri-Five, or just a fan. Here you will find information on how to decipher your VIN tag and Cowl tag; which will tell you where your car was built, what engine and transmission came with it, and if it started life as a Bel Air, 210 or 150 model. You can find what your cars ORIGINAL color scheme was, and what interior came with it. If the dealer made changes, this tag will tell you that as well. You will also find information regarding accessory items that were added when the car was will find a representation of all the body styles; hardtop, convertible, sedan, Nomad or wagon for all three years, as well as what the side trim looked like to help your figure out which model you have.
2 We have included ORIGINAL power specs on the en-gines that were available, engine ID Codes that tell you which plant manufactured it and when. There are numbers for axle ID Tags, casting numbers for heads, intakes, distributors, radiators and more, as well as a schematic showing you where to find the ID Tag locations on the body , engine, trans, rear axle and where the VIN Number is stamped on the frame. We round out the section with a breakdown of the interior and exterior color codes, and we threw in some color samples just for good measure. 3 Coded into this tag is the following information:ABCDC H E V R O L E TV C 5 7 F 1 2 5 0 7A. This part of the code may be either one or two letters. If two, the first letter will always be a V . This indicates that the car has a V8 engine. The second letter will tell you the model series of the car. 4 Louis, MOK - Kansas City, MO T - Tarrytown, NYD. The last sequence of numbers is the serial number of the car. At a given body plant this number was not duplicated. The 1955 and 1956 starting number was 1001 at each assembly plant. The 1957 starting number was 100001 at each assembly plant. Corvettes (2900 series) were numbered separately. THE COwL TAG This aluminum plate is riveted to the cowl. On the 1955-56 cars it is found on the top of the firewall on the passenger side, except on 1955-56 air conditioned cars. The cowl tag on A/C cars can be found on the driver s side. The 1957 cowl tag can be found on the firewall in the engine compartment. There were two positions for the 1957 tag.
