Linear Metres English John Cragy was lawman of Orkney from at least 1496 to 1509. As a judicial officer in the earldom of Orkney he presided over courts, and issued documents testifying to the findings of the provenance of this document is unknown. Linear Metres English Captain John Yates, Royal Artillery (1825 - 1905), came to Orkney from the Gunnery School, Royal Artillery, in May 1867 to take up the post of Adjutant with the Orkney Brigade Garrison Artillery. He married Elizabeth Grace Saville in 1858, and died in Hull in 1905. 10 His father was born in St. Ola and his mother in South Ronaldsay, and the family lived in Walls. He appears to be the same James Copland who died in 1906 of the effects of a brain tumour in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. D1/34/1-3 Heddle papers : transcriptions 1754-1904 Transcripts by Miss Heddle of letters in the Heddle Papers (1754-1904), 1970s. Three volumes, two of which contain transcripts of correspondence from the collection held on the National Archives of Scotland and known as GD263. The third volume is an index to the other two. The correspondence is mainly concerned with the following Orkney families, to which Miss Heddle was related: Moodies and later Heddles of Melsetter, and later Heddles of Cletts, Fotheringhame and their Fea ancestors, Traills of Westove, Westness and Woodwick with further links with the Traills of Hobbister, Ratter and Frotoft. It covers the period from 1754 - 1904 Of particular interest is the survival of four of William Fotheringhame's private letter books.
