2 These free hospital based Ostomy lifestyle Classes , will be held seeing you at our monthly beginning Saturday September 8th in La Jolla, CA. next meeting! Booklets and videos are helpful, but they're no substitute for a real person who's been where you are! That's why Ostomy 101 Classes are facilitated by Sept. 28 @ 1pm real people living vibrantly with an Ostomy . Ostomy nurses from UCSD helped develop the curriculum and XIMED Wound Clinic made it a reality by donating Tri-City Medical Center class space. Classes are specially designed for pre-op and post-op Ostomy 4002 Vista Way, Oceanside patients and their family members &/or care givers.

3 They are non-medical CA lifestyle Classes . Lower Level room AR #1 The development of Ostomy 101 Classes has been a passion of mine since my surgery 2 years ago. The 60 hours I spent in the hospital from check-in, surgery, to check-out, was barely enough time to learn basic Ostomy care. Cont. page 2. I arrived home feeling isolated, overwhelmed and struggling to live with my Ostomy ? I thought, how do I sleep, shower and dress with my Ostomy ? How was I going to manage my Ostomy at work? Would I be able to swim, surf, travel or practice yoga again? What about intimacy and how do I manage all these supplies? A vital part of patient education was missing the day to day LIVING!

4 There are hospital based Classes for people who have hip replacement surgery, diabetes, take statin medications and people recovering from heart surgery where's the class for people living the rest of their lives with an Ostomy ? This was an inequality I set out to resolve. A million people said it couldn't be done for a hundred different reasons, okay maybe not a million, but that's what it felt like. All this poo-pooing (pun intended) was no match for the depth of my compassion for ostomates. Free, monthly Ostomy 101 Classes will begin in September. The intention is to equip Ostomy patients to live abundantly after Ostomy surgery and to also train other leaders to implement Ostomy 101 Classes in their community.

5 For a full class schedule and more information, visit Special thanks to the WOCN's at UCSD, Star Harrison, WOCN, Mary Ann Dilloway, WOCN, Justine Johnson, WOCN, Barb Twombly, WOCN and XIMED Wound Clinic for your pivotal role in making these Classes a reality. Special thanks to the Board Members of the Ostomy Support Group of North San Diego County, who not only cheered me on every step of the way, but voted to financially support the class start-up.
