The defining property of an ODE is that derivativesof the unknown functionu =dudxenter the equation. Thus, an equation that relates the independentvariablex, the dependent variableuand derivatives ofuis called anordinary DIFFERENTIAL equation. Someexamples of ODEs are:u (x) =uu + 2xu=exu +x(u )2+ sinu= lnxIn general, and ODE can be written asF(x,u,u ,u ,..) = contrast to ODEs, a PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL equation (PDE) contains PARTIAL derivatives of the depen-dent variable, which is an unknown function in more than one variablex,y.
5 Denoting the partialderivative of u x=ux, and u y=uy, we can write the general first order PDE foru(x,y) asF(x,y,u(x,y),ux(x,y),uy(x,y)) =F(x,y,u,ux,uy) = 0.( )Although one can study PDEs with as many independent variables as one wishes, we will be primar-ily concerned with PDEs in two independent variables. 7 This happens precisely due to thenonlinearity of theuuxterm, which is quadratic in uand its derivatives .Notice that for a linear equation, ifuis a solution, then so iscu, and ifvis another solution, thenu+vis also a solution. Notice that ifuhis a solution to the homogeneous equation( ), andupis a particular solution to the inhomogeneous equation ( ), thenuh+upis also a solutionto the inhomogeneous equation ( ). IndeedL(uh+up) =Luh+Lup= 0 +g= , in order to find the general solution of the inhomogeneous equation ( ), it is enough to findthe general solution of the homogeneous equation ( ), and add to this a particular solution of theinhomogeneous equation (check that the difference of any two solutions of the inhomogeneous equationis a solution of the homogeneous equation).
8 In this sense, there is a similarity between ODEs and PDEs,since this principle relies only on the linearity of the ExamplesExample 0 Remember that we are looking for a functionu(x,y), and the equation says that the PARTIAL derivativeofuwith respect toxis 0, soudoes not depend onx. Henceu(x,y) =f(y), wheref(y) is an arbitraryfunction ofy. Alternatively, we could simply integrate both sides of the equation with respect on this in the following +u= 0 Similar to the previous example, we see that only the PARTIAL derivative with respect to one of thevariables enters the equation. In such cases we can treat the equation as an ODE in the variable in whichpartial derivatives enter the equation, keeping in mind that the constants of integration may depend onthe other variables. Rewrite the equation asuxx= u,which, as an ODE, has the general solutionu=c1cosx+ the constants may depend on the other variabley, the general solution of the PDE will beu(x,y) =f(y) cosx+g(y) sinx,wherefandgare arbitrary functions.
9 To check that this is indeed a solution, simply substitute theexpression back into the 0We can think of this equation as an ODE foruxin theyvariable, since (ux)y= 0. Then similar tothe first example, we can integrate inyto obtainux=f(x).This is an ODE foruin thexvariable, which one can solve by integrating with respect tox, arrivingat at the solutionu(x,y) =F(x) +G(y). ConclusionNotice that where the solution of an ODE contains arbitrary constants, the solution to a PDE containsarbitrary functions. In the same spirit, while an ODE of ordermhasmlinearly independent solutions, aPDE has infinitely many (there are arbitrary functions in the solution!). These are consequences of thefact that a function of two variables contains immensely more (a whole dimension worth) of informationthan a function of only one Set 11.
