3 Have I had a long sleep? Or maybe I should not eat chocolate!! December, and most of us go into a frenzy. We have good food every day, why do we go overboard? Our stomach is not any bigger. I remember throwing away crust of bread as a child and my grandmother asked me to pick it up, kiss and give thanks for it. Then I was allowed to discard it. That was a lesson I will not forget. Last week I was in the city and saw a young man sitting in a doorway looking very sad, maybe out of work, or homeless. I proceeded to a caf , got some food, and walked back to him. His look of gratitude made me feel very blessed to be able to give. I remember hardship, we don t know what they are going through until we can walk a mile in their November, cup month, hope your horse is not still running hahaha.

4 Nov. 13rd, fabulous night with the Kalamunda YSB you will agree. A great effort by both big bands. They truly are up and coming young musicians, we just love to have them play. This Year our club was 35 years old, hosting Trad Jazz and social club with a different band each week. I am very privileged to be president of this unbelievable long-time friendly club. To celebrate Rampart Street Ramblers gave us a great night of music, fun and dancing, thank you. Members, friends and visitors, what a fantastic attendance, 120 in all. Can we have this every week? Of course we can! Just believe and be there as I do. Was I prepared? Yes, I did not lick the cream on the knife. I did have the cake, and ate it too. What a buzz, before we knew it was pm.

5 Simon Millman our club Patron joined us in the fun, thank you. As I must fly out on the 5th Dec. we will have Christmas night next week Dec. 4th BLUE NOTE & vocals Joyce Mathers a treat for you us wear the colours of the Dec. season, bring the Christmas spirit as well as friends and family, looking forward to being with you all. Then 11th December club is the last night for 2018 with Powerhouse JB . We will enjoy the great music. Should you want dinner this night the cost will be $25 pp for a Christmas BBQ buffet, sweet $4 extra. Details of the menu are provided elsewhere in these Jazznotes. Please note that Don will be preparing and serving the food in the outdoor area. Don has 2 other functions that night, each in their separate space, just follow the committee guidance for the night and have fun.

6 No jazz in the park in DEC. **Our last gig for 2018 is on 11th Dec and we return in the New Year on 8th January. **January begins a New Year with great new things. 3 new bands for the club in the month. Our first special gig on 15th January is THE HOOTS TRAD BAND featuring 8 great musicians from our South West. Normal entry charges will apply. Then a new Barry Bruce band called Vintage JB on the 22nd January followed by the the newly formed TIN ROOF JB on the 29th. This was Vivienne Kidd s band before she and Martin departed for their artistic adventures in Spain many years ago and we welcome the band back. Weather permitting Proudly supported by Enquiries to Caterina 0414 942 730 or Mike 0424 291 770 Etoufee Files Bessie Smith Bessie Smith was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee in April 1894, the daughter of Laura and William Smith, a labourer and part time Baptist preacher. Her father died when Bessie was very young and her mother and a brother died when Bessie was only 9 years old, and her elder sister, Viola, took charge of the household.

8 To earn money, Bessie and brother Andrew began busking on the streets,, she singing and dancing and Andrew would play the guitar. Her older brother,Clarence left home to join a troupe with Moses Stokes but Bessie wasn t old enough to join him. When Clarence came home, Bessie joined the troupe as a dancer, but with Ma Rainey in the troupe, she featured as a singer, and commenced her recording career for Columbia in 1923. Bessie soon had a following although her vocal style was considered too rough. In 1923 Bessie married Jack Gee in Philadelphia, but the marriage was stormy, possibly due to Bessie s bisexuality, and although both had numerous lovers, they never divorced. With her strong contralto voice and the increasing popularity of her records, Columbia named her The Queen of the Blues but which was quickly upgraded to Empress.

9 Bessie made over 160 recordings for Columbia, with some of the finest Jazz musicians of the day, including Louis Armstrong and James P Johnson. Bessie had a career in Vaudeville and on Broadway, and even starred in a two-reeler film St Louis Blues. Bessie died from her injuries after her lover, Richard Morgan crashed her old Packard by trying to avoid a slow moving truck, which he hit at high speed. Bessie s right arm was severed at the elbow and she lost a lot of blood. The story that she was taken to a white hospital was untrue, as nobody would take a black patient to a white hospital, especially in Mississippi. She was taken to the G T Thomas hospital in Clarksdale where her arm was amputated and died without regaining consciousness on 27 September 1937 aged 43 Bessie was buried in the Mount Lawn Cemetery in Sharon Hill, with few mourners and no headstone.

10 Many years later , in 1970, Janis Joplin paid to have a headstone for Bessie. Bessie left a wealth of recordings, with St Louis Blues Careless Love Downhearted Blues - Empty Bed Blues for other Jazz Singers to continue her legacy.
