Our principal responsibility isthe safety of navigation along 95 miles of river from Teddington Lock tothe North also promote the use of the tidal Thames, work to ensure securityof port operations, and are responsible for protecting the have a team of more than 300 skilled staff within the organisationand our Hydrographic department, which prepares these tide tablesannually, is renowned as a centre of excellence in the UK operate two Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Centres at Gravesend andadjacent to the Thames Barrier.

It is one of the main arteries that feeds ourcapital city and the south east, supporting trade, travel, leisure andsporting activities. As custodians of the tidal Thames, everything we do is designed toensure that the river is, and remains, at its best. Our mission is tomaintain a safe river to support London and the south east in a widerange of activities, at work, rest and play.
5 We work closely with many valued partners and stakeholders toensure the river plays the maximum possible part in generating jobsand wealth for the country. We pay the same high level of attentionto helping maintain the Thames environment and the wildlife itsupports, for the benefit and enjoyment of many generations are funded through the fees paid by vessels using the Port,charges for the services we provide such as pilotage, and rents foranything in, under or over the river. We do not get any of our fundingfrom the Government or local authorities.
