1 1 TREATMENT OF TOOL datarecommendations for P/M tool steels2 This information is based on our present state of knowledge and isintended to provide general notes on our products and their uses. It shouldnot therefore be construed as a warranty of specific properties of theproducts described or a warranty for fitness for a particular Data Recommendationsfor P/M Tool SteelsMaterial characteristics and propertiesThe Uddeholm Powder Metallurgy (P/M) tool steels, VANADIS 4, VANADIS 6, VANA-DIS 10 and ELMAX and high speed steels, VANADIS 23, VANADIS 30 and VANADIS 60are all high carbon, high alloyed steels.

2 They are designed to give a high performancewhen it comes to abrasive or adhesive wear, chipping, galling, cracking, corrosion orplastic deformation. As they all contain a large amount of small and hard carbides theygive increased tool wear in Cutting operations compared to lower alloyed, convention-ally melted Cutting toolsTo prevent a heavy tool wear, we recommend the use of carbide- and HSS-tools with awear resistant coating. Carbide inserts with a thick Al2O3-coating intended for cast ironmachining often gives a good tool life when machining in P/M-tool steels.

3 This is validboth for turning and milling operations. When finishing turning with small feed rateand depth of cut, mixed ceramic inserts can be an alternative for long tool dataDue to the large amount of hard and abrasive carbides in the P/M-steels, a high feedrate but a modest Cutting speed is recommended. A high feed rate will give a shortersliding distance between work material and the tool. A modest Cutting speed will keepthe temperature down in the Cutting HSS-tools, depending on operation we recommend TiN-, TiCN- or Cutting data Recommendations are valid for Uddeholm Powder Metallurgical tool steels and highspeed steels: ELMAX, VANADIS 4, VANADIS 6, VANADIS 10, VANADIS 23, VANADIS 30 and VANADIS 60.

4 In casethe value varies depending on tool steel grade, the steel grade and its value is data are always dependent on the actual operation, the machine tool and the Cutting tool used.
