2 Manufacturers who wish to participate in APAS within their own countries should consult APAS document D175. APAS approval to this specification may be gained by compliance with the requirements detailed in this specification and those in document D192 The APAS Product Approval System . APAS Documents may be downloaded from the APAS web site located at: 1. Scope Description & guide for users A two pack Polyurethane paint System to be used for the Finishing and refinishing of Vehicles and equipment of the Australian Defence Services. Available in a flat (APAS 0154/1 and /8) or low gloss (APAS 0154/3 and /9) and at two levels of infra red reflectance; "Conventional" provides low IR reflectance for maximised camouflage effect.

3 Near Infrared Reflecting (designated "NIRR") is intended for minimised solar heat absorption. The paint systems shall be suitable for use over suitably pretreated ferrous and non-ferrous metal surfaces and also over aged Polyurethane or alkyd paintwork. The Finishing paint, when applied by spray in accordance with the manufacturers directions to a vertical surface, shall produce a film of dry thickness 20 - 30 m. (a) On Ferrous MetalsFollowing metal pretreatment by phosphating or abrasive blast cleaning, application of one coat of epoxy primer to APAS 0154/2 (conforming to the performance requirements of MIL-P-53022) or one coat of a suitable commercial multipurpose primer to APAS 0154/6, followed by one coat of the appropriate Polyurethane finish, APAS 0154/1, 3, 8 or 9.

4 (b) On Non Ferrous MetalsFollowing metal pretreatment by conversion coating or application of an etch primer to APAS 0154/5, application of a coat of epoxy primer to APAS 0154/7 (conforming to the performance requirements of MIL-P-23377) or one coat of a suitable commercial multipurpose primer to APAS 0154/6 followed by Polyurethane finish, as in above. (c) On Previously Painted SurfacesFollowing pretreatment by removing any oil or grease and by lightly abrading the previous film of aged Polyurethane or aged alkyd paint, application of Polyurethane finish, as in above. Compositional requirements BinderThe Polyurethane finish (APAS 0154/1, 3, 8 or 9) shall be supplied in two components. One component shall consist essentially of orthophthalic trimethylol propane polyesters combined with pigments and solvents. The second component shall consist essentially of an aliphatic polyisocyanate dissolved in solvents. The two components shall be mixed in a simple volume ratio.

8 VolatilesAlthough not restricted by this specification , the volatile component can be expected to consist principally of hydrocarbon based solvents. 0154 Revision no. 12 - 6 December 2006 Authorised by Executive Officer, APAS page 2 of 9 Copyright APAS 2006 PigmentationThe pigmentation shall be chosen to provide the properties detailed in Table 1 below. Some colours (eg reds, oranges or yellows) may variously contain lead or chromate-based pigments qualifying for Schedule 1 status according to the Australian Uniform Paint Standard. Such colours shall be clearly identified in accordance with local legislation and regulations.

9 Colour requirements Products approved under this specification are normally available in a wide range of colours (MCR Manufacturer s Colour Range), including camouflage colours and colours suitable for producing a disruptive pattern (DPP) finish; Camouflage Green (Olive Drab), Camouflage Brown, Black, Pilbara Brown as well as Olive Drab, White and Off White. 4. Requirements for Product Approval General requirementsThe product and its application for approval shall comply with the relevant requirements of APAS Document D192 during the life of the approval. Technical requirementsThe product shall comply with all the requirements of Table 1 below.

10 Tests are to be carried out under the routine conditions of AS/NZS unless otherwise specified. Panels are to be cured for 24 hours before testing unless otherwise specified. For all Finishing products testing shall be performed in accordance with Tables 1 and 2 below. For all priming products, initial testing shall be performed in accordance with the tests detailed in Table 1 under the heading "For Each Component". Note 1. The primer shall subsequently be included in some tests involving the coating System and satisfactory test results as part of the coating System tested will allow granting of approval to the particular primer used).
