In thisrevision the following changes were made from the original versionpublished in 1993:I have sought to edit and reformat the book to make it morereadable. I have also divided Chapter 6, The Holy Spirit and PowerEncounter, into two chapters: The Baptism in the Holy Spirit andPower Encounter and Gifts of the Holy Spirit and PowerEncounter. In the chapter on gifts of the Holy Spirit I have added anew section entitled Releasing Spiritual Gifts.

I have also addedchapters on Pastoring the Spiritual Gifts and Power Ministry andCampaign Evangelism. We trust that these changes will make thisedition of the book even more usable than the Encounter was originally written as a textbook fortraining African pastors and church leaders at the Assemblies of GodSchool of Theology in Lilongwe, Malawi where I taught for morethan a Decade . It was then picked up and published in an expanded, more academic, version by Discovery Books, Springfield, Missouri,USA, under the title Power Ministry: A Handbook for PentecostalPreachers. This version of the book has been translated andpublished into eight languages and is used as a textbook throughoutAfrica.

Those who want to use the book in a classroom setting maywant to contact Discovery Books for the more academic revised version of the book is rewritten with a broaderreadership in mind. I have removed many of the study aids in orderthat the text may flow without interruption. I have, nevertheless, retained the content and reflection questions and placed them at theend of each Introduction In recent years there has been a call from church leaders andBible school administrators for a course of study dealing with issuesthat daily effect the lives and ministries of Majority World pastors, evangelists, and church leaders issues concerning the role ofspiritual Power in ministry.

Many are asking, How can weeffectively minister in the Power and anointing of the Holy Spirit? How can we pray for the sick, and see them healed? How can welead our members into the experience of the baptism in the HolySpirit? This book was written to address these vital concerns. The design of this book is threefold: First, it seeks to lay abiblical foundation for a Power ministry. It is only on such a firmfoundation that a credible, lasting ministry in the Spirit can be issue is addressed in Part I, Understanding Power Ministry. Next, this book deals with the personal preparation one needs tominister in the Power of the Holy Spirit.

What kind of person shoulda Power minister be? What things should he or she know andexperience before entering into such a ministry? These issues areaddressed in Part II, Preparation for a Power Ministry. Finally, Iseek to offer practical advice on how one may actually do powerministry. This is the aim of Part III, The How To of PowerMinistry. It is my sincere desire that this book will serve as a practical,on-the-job-training manual for those who are sincerely seeking toobey the command of Jesus to preach the gospel with signsfollowing (Mark 16:15-20). Part I Understanding Power Ministry Chapter 1 Power Ministry DefinedWhen Jesus returned to heaven He did not leave His churchpowerless.

He gave to it all the Power it needed to get the job promised that He would give it Power to evangelize the wholeworld (Acts 1:8). He first fulfilled that promise on the Day ofPentecost when He poured out the Holy Spirit on the waitingdisciples (Acts 2:1-4). As a result, the New Testament church wentout and ministered in great Power and with amazing results. Somehave described the method of the early church as Power this chapter we will introduce this concept. We will do this byfirst discussing the need for Power ministry in the church today. Wewill then define certain key terms that relate to the NEED FOR A Power MINISTRY As did the early church, the church today still needs Power if itis to fulfill its God-given mandate of evangelizing all nations beforeJesus comes again (Matt.)

24:14). There are at least four reasons thechurch must have a ministry filled with the God s Power : We Are Involved in a WarThe Bible clearly teaches that we who call ourselves thechildren of God are involved in a great spiritual war. We wage thiswar against the devil and his demonic legions. Jesus taught that our enemy .. is the devil (Matt. 13:39, cf., Luke 10:19). Paul alsospoke of this spiritual conflict: 8 Power Ministry DefinedFor our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against therulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark worldand against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
