These have been structured around seven platforms: Being an accountable professional. Promoting health and preventing ill health. Assessing needs and planning care. Providing and evaluating care. Leading and managing nursing care and working in teams. Improving safety and quality of care. Coordinating AnnexeA: Communication and relationship management skills. AnnexeB: Nursing students will be assessed against these platforms-and the specific benchmarks will be in their Practice Assessment Document (PAD)-see Practice learning site for copiesThe structure of the changes These high-level standards focus on the learning culture in the placement. It should prioritise safety and values-based learning. They highlight the need to demonstrate strong educational governance and high quality education through compliance and continuous improvement in education delivery and management.
Student empowerment is central to these standards . Each AEI, with its placement partners, will need to demonstrate that students are fully supported and enabled to achieve their proficiencies and learning outcomes and that independent learning is facilitated. Educators and assessors must be supported, enabling them to be effective in their role. And finally, the curricula and assessment must be innovative and demonstrate effective development to meet the relevant programme standards and enable the achievement of proficiencies and learning slide is taken from the NMC (2018) SISSSA resource pack available at (accessed on 12/11/20)Click on the movie icon to watch a 1 min 30 sec video by the NMC outlining the connection between the new Future Nurse standards of proficiency and the standards for Education and TrainingThis image is taken from the NMC (2018) SISSSA resource pack available at (accessed on 12/11/20)This change to the professional proficiencies (development of the Future Nurse) has led to a change in approach to supporting students which is set out in the standards for Student Supervision and Assessment-these standards are just one part of a suite of standards relating to education and Training .
How do the new standards relate to previous standards for supporting students? Previous standards were: NMC (2008) standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice (SLAiP) These referred to mentor, sign-off mentor, Practice teacher New standards : NMC (2018) standards forStudent Supervision andAssessment (known as SSSA) These refer to skills facilitators, Practice supervisors and Practice assessorsWhen do these new standards come in?THEY HAVE ALREADY BEEN as part of the response to the Covid 19 pandemic during the summer of 2020, the NMC instructed all Universities to implement these new standards immediately, using internal approval processes. There are nomentors/sign-off mentors/ Practice teachers. Student nurses, student nurse associates and student midwives must be allocated a Practice Assessor and be supported by Practice supervisors and skills courses does this apply to?
Pre-registration nursing and midwifery. Midwifery. Nurse associate. Specialist community public Health Nursing (SCPHN). Specialist Practice Qualification (SPQ). Prescribing. Return to Practice . Any other NMC approved post-registration point How is the future nurse approach different from our previous approach to nursing? (You may find it useful to watch this 3 min video) What are the seven platforms (and two annexes) which make up the new Future Nurse proficiencies? You may be supporting a range of students under the new SSSA standards -which courses could they come from? Have you looked at the Proficiencies for that course on the NMC website and the PAD for that course on the Practice Learning Support site?At intervals throughout this presentation you will be prompted to reflect back on the issues covered-they are called thinking key roles in the new standardsBackground to the new standards Ongoing concerns with Failure to Fail (Duffy 2003).
Move towards less top-down regulation by NMC. Need for greater flexibility around who can support students to facilitate placement allocations. Greater separation between the nurse who makes the assessment from the nurse who supports the student on their learning journey. No requirement for educational courses for clinicians to have NMC approval. Assessing nurse/midwife/nurse associate can have multiple students and the level of this is agreed Clinical Learning TeamNew structures: Nominated person Practice Assessor Practice supervisor Key Practice supervisor Skills facilitator Academic assessorNominated person Nominated by their own department to be a link between the students and the University. first point of contact for students and offer support and advice for students who have concerns.
