Elementary Lesson 11: Jesus Walks on Water February 19/20 Bible Point: When we doubt, Jesus helps us believe. Key Verse: If we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself (2 Timothy 2:13). Pre Activity 10 min ICEBREAKER : First 5 Min: Welcome children to the classroom as they arrive. Ask children one fun thing that they did this past week or weekend. Ask what they remember from last week s lesson. Next 5 Min: Split into your small groups (boys and girls split one classroom leader per group). Group is a great place to get to know each other better and pray for one another! Are you enjoying small groups? What is the best part?

Small Group ICEBREAKER Fun Question of the Day: If you could have one talent that you can do better than anyone, what would it be? (each child will give an answer, then the group decides on the most creative; they will then share their group answer at the beginning of large group lesson time: may the group with the most creative answer win!) *Take kids to 203 for worship and the lesson at ten after. Dry erase marker write the key verse on the board Worship 15 min WORSHIP: Lesson Leader (LL): Welcome children and state the lesson name and bible point. Open in prayer. Begin worship by getting kids excited! Worship: 1. We Shine 2. Live It Out 3.

Fearfully & Wonderfully Made When songs are completed, have the kids sit in a big circle. (teachers joining the circle; preferably sitting near those that are more quick to distract) Live It Out CD Laptop Lesson 15 20 min LARGE GROUP LESSON: LL: Before we begin our lesson today, let s let each small group share their best answer for the fun question of the day! If you could one talent that you can do better than anyone, what would it be? Have the kids vote by applause on the winner. At one end of the room, place a small pile of confetti for each group. Set a few trashcans on the other side of the room. We re going to have a race to see which group can be first to move all of its confetti to the other side of the room.

The catch is that you can move the confetti using only the balloon. Begin by rubbing the balloon on your head (or a teammate s head) five or six times. Then bring the balloon to the confetti. Take the confetti to the trashcan on the other side of the room, and rub it off with your hands. Hand the balloon to the next teammate, and have him or her go back to the pile for more. The game is over when I say, stop or when a group has moved all of its confetti. Rub a balloon on your head a few times, and have kids watch as you make some confetti jump from the table or floor to your balloon. Make sure children understand the rules, and then begin the game.

Stop the game when a group has finished. Have the group discuss the following questions: How did you get the confetti to stick to the balloon? Why do you think that worked? Did you have any doubts that the confetti would stick to the balloon? Why or Why not? What was amazing about this activity? What is the most amazing thing you ve ever seen? In this game, you could move the paper because of static electricity. It looked pretty cool and was different from the way we normally do things, but it wasn t a miracle. It was just a law of science in action. Today we re going to learn about a real miracle that took place when Jesus was on earth. And we ll learn that when we doubt, Jesus helps us believe.

Our key verse for today is: If we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself (2 Timothy 2:13). Let s repeat it together. Bag of balloons Trash cans confetti Dry erase marker Bible Have a bowl of water at the front of the classroom, a piece of paper, pile of paper clips and a pair of scissors. Jesus didn t use tricks or science experiments to do amazing things. Jesus is God, so he used his power to do miracles. I want to tell you about an amazing miracle Jesus did. Open a few Bibles to Matthew 14 and ask for a volunteer to read verses 22 24, another volunteer to read 25 29 and another volunteer to read 30 33.

How do you suppose Jesus went out to the disciples? Jesus walked on water! When Peter saw Jesus, Peter went out and walked on water, too! Raise your hand if you think this piece of paper will float when you first put it in the bowl. Lower your hand if you think it will sink after 20 seconds .. 30 seconds ..one minute. Place the paper feet in the bowl. Call out after each 10 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 seconds and a minute. Wow! The feet are still floating. That s amazing. Of course, it s not a miracle. It just reminds us of the real miracle Jesus did. What happened next with Peter? When Peter saw the wind, he became afraid and he began to sink.

Jesus asked him, Why did you doubt? What sometimes makes us doubt that Jesus is taking care of us? Let s show what doubt does by heaping doubts on our paper footprint. Pretend that each paper clip stands for a doubt as we place them one at a time on the paper footprint. Let s see how many paper clips can be put on the paper before it sinks. Why did the footprint sink in the bowl? Why did Peter sink in the water? What happens when we doubt? What should we do when we doubt? When Peter doubted, he stopped looking at Jesus. When we doubt, we forget to look to Jesus, too. One of my favorite parts of the story is how bowl of water piece of paper cut in the shape of feet pile of paper clips pair of scissors Jesus reached out and helped Peter.

I like that because it reminds me that even when I doubt, Jesus is there to help me. When we doubt, Jesus helps us believe. But we don t have to doubt. Jesus took care of Peter, and Jesus will take care of you, too. What is our key verse for the day again have the class read it out loud: If we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself (2 Timothy 2:13). We are now going to go back to our classrooms and talk more about how Jesus helps us believe when we doubt. Before we go Let s pray. *Dismiss by grade. (starting with the quietest grade!) Small Groups 25 min **Each child it to get of paper and small squares of paper.

Help students fold their own boats. Keep Afloat We all struggle with doubts sometimes, and we all need to trust God more. I would like you to think of about four things you need to trust God with. For example you could write or draw Not getting hurt For each thing you ve written or drawn, tape it to the bottom of your boat. Then choose one thing that you ve written or drawn and taped to the bottom of your boat that you are going to trust God with this week does anyone want to share? SMALL GROUPS: K 2nd Small Groups: Small Group Leader (SGL): Read the key verse again. Key Verse: If we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself (2 Timothy 2:13).
