Preach The Word THE BIBLE. When we hold a Bible in our hands, we hold the greatest collection of books that has been, or will ever be, written. It is a collection of 66 books, written by about 40 authors, on three continents (Africa, Asia, Europe), over a period of 1500 to 1600 years. The name Bible simply has reference to the point of it being a collection of books. As such, the name did not come from God, nor does it, per se, have any special meaning behind it. The Bible could just as easily have been called The Books, with no damage having been made.

In consideration of the Bible, we are confronted with the question of what we are to do with it. This article will provide us with information concerning this question, and how we are to treat it. We are to believe it. The Bible claims to be from God in such passages as 2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Peter 1:20, 21. Because of this claim, it should either be believed or proven to be wrong. Over the years there have been numerous alleged contradictions found within the Bible. However, not one has stood the test of authentication. The following books would be good additions to your personal library on this subject: Alleged Bible Contradictions Explained, George W. DeHoff; Alleged Discrepancies of the Bible, John Haley; The Anvil Ring, Answers to Alleged Bible Discrepancies, Vol.

1 and 2, Eric Lyons; The Bible on Trial, Wayne Jackson. The Bible's unity in diversity proves it to be from Someone other than mere man. A book, written over such a lengthy time, by such a large number of authors, yet without a verifiable contradiction suggests we believe it or prove it to be wrong. Fulfilled prophecy proves it to be inspired of God. Within the Old Testament are over 300 prophecies concerning Christ, of which the majority have been fulfilled. Archaeology and history prove it to be of God. For years it was said that the archaeologists' spade would eventually prove the Bible to be true. Such has been the case. We are to investigate it. At times people act as if they are afraid to have the Bible investigated. It is as if they believe the Bible totters on some level of which it could easily fall.

But such is not true. We should not be fearful of honest investigation. If we really believe the Bible to be what is claims it is, why fear an investigation? The Bereans were not afraid to investigate what they were told (Acts 17:11). The Apostle Paul instructed Timothy to rightly divide the word of God (2 Timothy 2:15). This would require investigation. The same Apostle commanded the Thessalonians to prove all things (1 Thessalonians 5:21). The Apostle John gave instruction concerning the need to try the spirits to see whether they were of God (1 John 4:1). To come to a full and honest understanding of Scripture, we should be willing to investigate what the Bible has to say, in order to have the confidence we should have in it. We should build upon it. We should remember the two builders in Matthew 7:24-27.

One built his house upon the strong foundation of God's word. This foundation stood the storms of life. The other, built his foundation on the sinking sands, which caused his house to fall as the rains came down. As Christians, we should be using the Bible to build our Christian lives as seen in Romans 10:17 and 2 Peter 1:5. As we keep the commands of God, we are able to build our spiritual houses in such a way that when the issues of life must be faced, we are able to do so with confidence (James 1:2-4). We should live its precepts. There are numerous precepts found within the Bible that we should be living by. Precepts such as found in Romans 12:1, 2. Think how the world would be changed if all would live according to this text. Consider Titus 2:11, 12 and how things would so dramatically change if the world was to follow this text.

Think on the words found in 2 Peter 1:5-11, and how different things would be if people allowed their lives to be changed by these passages. Enjoy the promises. The Bible is filled with promises for the one who obeys the gospel, and remains faithful to God after his obedience. Some of these promises are found in 2 Peter 1:3,4; Matthew 6:33; Romans 8:28; Philippians 4:13. and Matthew 25:46. The Bible is the greatest book ever written. Let us believe it, investigate it, build upon it, live its precepts and enjoy its promises.
