Important to assess the effects penetrations will have on the roof profile. This can be done by calculating the water diversion of blocked pans by traditional tray flashing and soaker methods. Profile assessed to be ok at 30m long, but because of small penetrations diverting water from 3 pans into a singular pan, can cause it to carry as much water as a 44m roof. Water Flow DiagramWater Carrying Capacity -Small Penetrations Small penetrations (150mm or under) should always be liaised with the installing trade, when possible. They should be positioned directly through the rib of a sheet so as to not obstruct water flow inside the Carrying Capacity -Small PenetrationsIf a Penetration blocks an entire pan, a tray flashing should be installed to the high point in the roof to ensure water is diverted away from the Carrying Capacity:Over Capacity Due to Penetrations Large unavoidable penetrations can make the specified roofing profile not suitable.
4 To combat this, we can manually divert water. The new proprietary PopUp Penetration kits are available to do this. 5 All flashings running parallel with the roof should encompass at least two ribs and therefore create a dry pan .Metal Battens Metal Battens Refer to manufacturers technical manual when determining batten spacing. Most commonly used batten size is 40mm Typically, Metal roof battens can be sufficiently spaced at 900mm centres, however closer at the ridge and eaves to suit end-spans and wind load ratings. Safety battens should be installed if rafters/trusses are spaced over 600mm centres. Battens should always be lapped over a rafter/truss where possible and fixed either side with the correct size screw. Acceptable Overflow MeasuresRainwater HeadWith-(a)a 75 mm diameter hole in the outward face of the rainhead; and(b)The centreline of the hole positioned 100 mm below the top of the fascia. Valley GuttersValley gutters on a roof with a pitch (i) More than degrees must have width of not less than 400mm and be wide enough to allow the roof covering to overhang not less than 150mm each side of the gutter; or (ii)Not more than degrees must be designed as a box gutter. Down PipesDownpipes must (a) Not serve more than 12 m of gutter length for each downpipe; and (b) Be located as close as possible to valley gutters; and(c) Be appropriately sized due to location and rainfall intensity. CorrosionCorrosion: Ponding & Incorrect Falls Ponding occurs when water pools on a surface with incorrect pitch or fall. Box gutters should be installed with a minimum uniform fall of 1 in 200 towards the outlet and eaves gutters with a minimum 1 in 500 to ensure complete drainage.
9 Flashings and cappings should all be installed with inward fall to prohibit ponding of RepairRepair -Minor Scratches Bluescope Steel do not recommend the touching-up of minor scratches on Colorbond steel. It is their advice that minor scratching will not affect the life of the sheet and is rarely obvious to a casual observer. An example where spray paint has been used. Spray paint weathers at a different rate to the oven dried paint on Colorbond steel and you ll eventually be left with an unsightly blemish on the : Swarf When Colorbond or Zincalume steel is cut, steel debris or swarf is created and when left on exposed surfaces will corrode and cause rust stains. Swarf should always be prevented by the use of cold-cutting techniques shears or an appropriate tungsten blade as it generates larger and cooler particles than abrasive discs. Immediately after drilling or cutting, the roof should be blown or vacuumed to remove loose particles. If sweeping or rinsing swarf into a gutter, ensure the gutter is cleaned before leaving the : Swarf StainingCleaning of Swarf Staining:For MildStaining, wash the surface with diluted mild household detergent and fresh water and rinse well afterward.
