1 May 2012 President s Notes by Daniel Porter, CFE People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the win-dow and wait for Spring. ~Rogers Hornsby Rogers Hornsby clearly loved base-ball. Similarly, I stare out the window waiting for Spring, but I m not waiting for baseball I m waiting to get started on my list of chores for the farm. Some play golf while others plant flowers. Whatever your activity, Spring is a time for new beginnings and as this chapter year winds down, we are looking forward to the beginning of a new year. In June we install new chapter officers, so if you didn t like speakers at the luncheons or thought the food at the conference was not good, con-tact Melinda Crutchfield and tell her you want to get on the board.

See you at the luncheon on May 17. Luncheon Information Our 2011 2012 CFE luncheons will be held at the Scarritt Bennett Center located at 1008 19th Avenue South in Nashville. All luncheons will begin at 11:30am. The luncheon dates this year are: Thursday, May 17, 2012 Thursday, June 14, 2012 (Social) Please review the calendar on page 7 for all Middle Tennessee Chapter events. May Luncheon The May luncheon will be held on Thurs-day, May 17, 2012 at 11:30am at the Scar-ritt Bennett Center in the Raintree Room. Carlos Holt will be the speaker and his top-ic will be Tried and True Investigative Inter-viewing Techniques: Successful Examples from the Presenter s Case Files.

He has testified in both local and fed-eral cases and was a co-author of the ACFE book Les-sons from the Bad Side of Business. Mr. Holt served 21 years in the Marine Corps with participation in Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom.

4 His re-sume includes Head, Management, Analysis and Control; Auditor/Investigator Inspector General (DOD); Services Officer, Marine Expeditionary Force; and, adjunct professor at two colleges. He is current-ly employed by the Office of Internal Audit, Metropoli-tan Government of Nashville and Davidson County as the Internal Audit Manager. Member Profile Deborah Kinchen, CPA, CFE, CGMA I was born and raised in southern West Virginia and lived there for 22 years, attending West Vir-ginia University and moonlighting first at McDonald s and then at a hardware store yes, I can use power tools! My favorite job in high school was a summer job work-ing with the District Attor-ney, typing depositions and researching deeds and other public records. After I left West Virginia, I moved to Seattle, Wash-ington where I worked in the accounting department of a retail lighting fixture company before departing for sunny (and much less rainy) southern California.

5 While in California, I earned an accounting degree at California State University, Fullerton and worked as an accountant for a computer company and later at Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA). While at OCTA, I earned my CPA moonlighting first with KPMG and then Ernst and Young. In 1997, I went to work as an auditor for Nissan in Torrance, California and earned my MBA in International Fi-nance. After a tour of duty through Nissan s account-ing and customs departments (as in imports), I re-turned to my first love, auditing, in the early 2000 s. In 2005, I transferred to the Nissan manufacturing plant in Smyrna, Tennessee as an auditor and when Nissan moved their headquarters to Tennessee in 2006, I returned to work at the new headquarters building. In early 2010, I passed the CFE exam (something that a long ago mentor at OCTA had en-couraged me to do).

6 My husband and I share three children one mine and two his, and I have two grandbabies who live in Oregon. In my spare time, I enjoy visiting family, reading, hiking, camping and raising a garden. April Meeting Minutes Chapter President Daniel Porter called the meeting to order, welcomed everyone to the Scarritt Bennett Center, and had the members introduce their guests. Daniel announced that the 16th Annual Fraud Confer-ence was a success, and that Dennis Dycus presen-tation could be counted for CFE ethics. Daniel reminded the group of the benefits of being a Chapter member, which includes having your CFE certificate framed. Daniel presented Mark See and Kevin Huffman with their framed CFE certificates. Daniel announced that the nominating committee is accepting nominations for the 2012 2013 Chapter year.

7 He announced that the Chapter will be award-ing one scholarship for $1,500 dollars and five schol-arships for $1,000 dollars. Applications for scholar-ships are due May 14, 2012. Daniel announced the June social would be June 14, 2012 but the location has yet to be determined. He also announced that a cfe exam prep course will be given away at the Social. Sandie Glover introduced the speaker, Judge Marion Wall, who is an Administrative Judge for the State of Tennessee. Judge Wall selected the $25 dollar door prize and Carlos Holt was the winner. Daniel then adjourned the meeting. May 2012 Page 3 CFE Review course Giveaway The Middle Tennessee Chapter of Certified Fraud Examiners is having a drawing to give away a cfe exam prep course . To be eligible for the drawing, you MUST be a Chapter member AND have at-tended the 16th Annual Fraud Conference.

8 A drawing will be held at the June 14, 2012 social. The winner MUST take the exam within 9 months. In the event you fail to complete the CFE prep and CFE Exam within 9 months, you will agree to reimburse the MTACFE the cost of the CFE prep which is $745. If you are interested, please register online by COB on June 8th, 2012. #gid=0 ACFE Scholarship Program Every year, the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners awards scholarships to outstanding Middle Tennessee stu-dents pursuing a career in business, criminal justice, or law. One scholarship in the amount of $1,500 and five scholarships in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded. Scholarships will be awarded at the June 14, 2012, social, and scholarship recipients will be invited to attend the dinner.

9 The eligibility requirements include: Enrollment in a Middle Tennessee area college or university Business, criminal justice, information technology or legal-related major Minimum grade point average ( scale) To apply: Complete the scholarship application. Attach current high school or college transcripts. Attach two letters of recommendation from non-relatives. Attach an original 250-word essay on why you de-serve the scholarship and how fraud awareness will affect your career development. *Special consideration will be given to MTACFE members and their families. Completed applications for 2012 scholarships, includ-ing all supporting materials, must be received by the close of business on May 14, 2012. We will recog-nize the successful recipients at our June Social, which is scheduled for June 14, 2012.
