They are therefore not A 5-S hydrolyses inaqueous solutions and is in-compatible with alkalis and amines. Preventol A 5-S has good thermal stability so that there is no risk involved when the product is dissolved at elevated temperaturesin the above solvents or in dryingoils or solvent-based A 5-S has no adverseeffect on the properties of coatingseven when subjected to long-termoutdoor A 5-S contains traces of insoluble inert material (approx.)

It is particularly effective against wood-staining fungi (blue stain, mould).
4 As Preventol A 5-S isvirtually insoluble in water and non-volatile, the fungicidal effect ofcoatings containing this substancelasts for many years. Formulationscontaining Preventol A 5-S aregenerally colour-fast, although thisshould be tested in each individualcase. Preventol A 5-S can alsoprevent secondary infection (mouldformation on a dirt layer adhering tothe substrate).ApplicationPreventol A 5-S can beincorporated into a formulationpredissolved in a suitable solvent orin a heated binder. In the case ofpigmented coatings it may beadded with the pigments and A 5-S is compatible withdrying oils and coating binders andhas no effect on the drying of acoating.
5 It can be combined with alldriers except lead. A combination ofcalcium, zircon and manganesewith a little cobalt has proved to bea good drier. It is essential to carryout preliminary tests to determine compatibility, especially in the caseof lead extended wood protection, whichincludes both protection againstwood destroying fungi and anti-blue-stain efficacy, combinations of Preventol A 5-S and Preventol A 8 have shown excellent addition, Preventol A 5-S has goodcompatibility with insecticides, ( Preventol HS 12 orPreventol HS 11).For antifouling coatings, acombination of Preventol A 5-S andcopper oxide is particularly A 5-S is not only effectiveagainst sessile sea organisms butalso against fresh water and seawater algae.
6 Preventol A 5-S isbecoming increasingly popular asan active ingredient in marineantifouling coatings as it is lessecotoxic than the organotincompounds which are still correctly stored and kept in the original sealed container, the shelf life is 1 year. 7 The precautionsgenerally recommended for handling chemicals should be observed, wearing of safetygoggles, protective gloves and the product comes into contactwith the skin, the affected areashould be washed immediately withsoap and plenty of water; splashesin the eyes should be rinsed out immediately with plenty of water. Ifirritation persists, medical attentionshould be obtained. Contaminatedclothing should be changed active ingredient tolylfluanidhas been examined by the formerGerman Federal Health Office(BGA) (now: BgVV) with regard toits health properties and has beenapproved for use in woodpreservatives (letter from theGerman Federal Health Office ofJune 7th, 1990 to Bayer AG).
8 Regarding the general use of woodpreservatives and coatings containing biocides we should like topoint out the following:Wood preservatives contain biocidalactive ingredients to protect woodagainst pests. They must be appliedaccording to the instructions for useand only in those cases whereprotective measures are necessaryand where they pose no practical riskto man. They should not generally beused in living or recreational areas, orat least should only be applied to avery small surface area and inamounts not exceeding the minimumnecessary. They must not be appliedto wood which is likely to come intoprolonged contact with the skin or towood which comes into direct contactwith remedial wood treatment, wood preservativesshould be used indoors exclusivelyon constructional timber and shouldbe applied by professionals timber has to be covered toprevent dust discharges into living orrecreational not breath in product fumes oraerosols.
9 Effective ventilation must beprovided during and after the use ofwood preservatives. Eating, drinkingand smoking must be prohibitedduring work. The same applies tocoatings containing AGBusiness Group Specialty Products Business Unit Material Protection 51368 Leverkusen / GermanyFax: (02 14) 30-6 29 95 The current safety data sheet should be observed. This contains further information on labelling, transportand storage as well as information on handling, product safety, toxicity and additions of Preventol A 5-SWood stains and impregnating agents with low binder content for protection against blue stain %, calculated on ready-to-use formulationSolvent-based %, calculated on film weightIn cases where infestation is expected to be low, 75 % of the suggested addition is antifouling 10 %, calculated on total formulationPreventol A 5-S is not phytotoxic.
10 Wood preservatives and coatings containing Preventol A 5-S can therefore beused on objects which may come into contact with plants after heavily infested substrate should be cleaned before a coating is biocides safely.
