Special studs prevent migration by imbedding themselves slightly into the airway mucosa, yet still allow for collateral ventilation between the stent and the airway wall. Dumon style silicone stents have beveled ends to maximize airflow and prevent granulation tissue from forming. These stents are designed to be removable, and thus they can safely be used for both malignant and benign I ve placed these stents on patients with malignant tumors arising from the esophagus, causing tracheal or esophageal wall erosion, leading to a fistula.

7 I ve performed all my fistula stent procedures with rigid bronchoscopy under general anesthesia. First, the location and size of the fistula were assessed. Then, the appropriate size stent was selected and inserted carefully with alligator forceps. In all cases we achieved appropriate closure of the fistula. Patient experienced symptoms of relief after stent placement, particularly of those symptoms related to airway aspiration. There were no complications related to the stent .
