1 800 252 1910 Fax: 1 708 867 546760 There s no need to be fearfulof bidding on an explosionproof project. The importantkey is to make sure thatyou ve got the correcthazardous location rating. Remember that you ll needthe Class, Division, NEMAand Group that the electricalequipment needs to complywith. Any safety officer onsite should know thisinformation. It is not enough to requestonly that the equipment mustmeet explosion proofrequirements as there are threeways this can be done. If non explosion proofequipment is installed inlocations that require thisprotection an explosion canoccur. Taking on a explosion proofproject can go smoothly or notgo smoothly. Let us help youwith it so it goes as smoothlyas possible. By taking on an explosionproof project like this you llbe separating yourself fromthe other guys. It could be away of carving out a niche foryourself as an explosion proofelevator components installer. Add explosion proof to yourproject portfolio and you llsee more opportunities forfuture work.

This is intended to giveelevator sales, technical and fieldpersonnel a better understanding ofthe hazardous locationdesignations and the equipmentavailable to meet theserequirements. The actual processesemployed to define and assignhazardous location designationsare complex and beyond the scopeof this summary. For completedetail and installation instructionssee Article 500 of the NationalElectrical Code.

GeneralHazardous location elevatorequipment is necessary in any areawhere the possibility of fire orexplosion exists, or may existbecause of flammable gases orvapors, flammable liquids, combustible dust, or ignitablefibers. These types of dangers areofficially classified by location(Class, Division, and Group)depending on the properties of theflammable vapors, liquids orgases, combustible dusts or fibersthat may be present and/or thelikelihood that a flammable orcombustible concentration orquantity is present. From an Elevator contractorperspective it is safe to say that ifthere is any likelihood that a fire orexplosion could conceivablyhappen, hazardous locationequipment should be installed, even if not specified by thecustomer. Class I AreaClassificationAreas in which flammable gasesor vapors are or may be present inthe air in quantities sufficient toproduce explosive or ignitablemixtures are Class A, B, C & D - Defines thetype of combustible gases in theClass I location atmosphere.

Class I Area Groups:Division 1 and 2A (acetylene)B (hydrogen) C (ethylene) D (propane)Class II AreaClassification Areas where combustible metal, carbonaceous dust, or othercombustible dust such as flour, grain, wood, etc., are or may bepresent in the air in quantitiessufficient to produce explosive orignitable mixtures are Class II. Group E, F, & G - Defines thetype of combustible dust in theClass II location II Area GroupsDivision 1 & 2 E (metals - Div. 1 only)F (coal)G (grain)Class III AreaClassificationAreas that are hazardous becauseof the presence of easily ignitablefibers or flyings, but are not likelyto be in suspension in the air inquantities sufficient to produceignitable mixtures are Class III GroupsDivision 1 & 2 1 AreaClassificationA Division 1 location is one inwhich the ignitable or combustiblegases, vapors or dust can existunder normal operating 2 AreaClassificationA Division 2 location is one inwhich the ignitable or combustiblegases, vapors or dust are stored, handled, processed or used, butnormally confined within closedcontainers or systems, or dispersedby positive mechanical this division the hazard iscreated by accidental rupture ofcontainers or systems, orequipment ClassificationsHazardous location enclosures arerated based on the Class andGroup to which they will beinstalled.

These are:NEMA 7 -Enclosures for use inlocations classified as Class I,Groups A, B, C, or D.(Combustible gases)NEMA 9 -Enclosures for use inlocations classified as Class II,Groups E, F, or G. (Combustibledust).NEMA 4X -Enclosures for usein Class 1, Division 2 locations ifused in conjunction withhermetically sealed ResistantEnclosures are constructed toprovide a degree of protectionagainst falling dirt, rain, sleet, snow, windblown dust, splashingwater and corrosion. Summary &RecommendationsTo summarize these hazardouslocation classifications for elevatorapplications: (1) the Class andGroup designation specifies if theexposure is gaseous orcombustible dust and (2) theDivision specifies if the hazard isalways present or exists only whena problem occurs. Because the Class I or II, Division1 category indicates that the hazardexists under normal conditions it isour recommendation that elevatorcomponents used have a NEMA 7or 9 rated enclosure. This is themost stringent application. In Class I or II, Division 2 areasexceptions to the enclosure ratingare allowed.

For elevatorapplications in Division 2, generalpurpose enclosures are permissibleif used in conjunction withhermetically sealed contacts. Formaximum protection the generalpurpose enclosure should beNEMA 4X Toll-Free: 1 800 252 1910 Fax: 1 708 867 546761 Let Us Help You With Your Next ProjectDDeeffiinniinngg HHaazzaarrddoouuss LLooccaattiioonnssOrder Toll-Free: 1 800 252 1910 Fax: 1 708 867 546762 BBuuiilltt LLiikkee aa TTaannkk TToo PPrrootteecctt LLiikkee aa TTaannkk!!Car Stations Class 1&2, Division 1 - NEMA 7/9 STOPRUN161718131415101112789456 ALARMCAR STATIONWITH NEMA 7 ENCLOSUREQUANTITY: CONDUITENTRANCE TOPOF CONDUITENTRANCE TOPOF Above: 3 stop Elevator car panel with freight doorbuttons, alarm button, variety of key switches, 2000 Fire ServiceCode and a multilight position Toll-Free: 1 800 252 1910 Fax: 1 708 867 546763 CCaarr SSttaattiioonnss -- HHaazzaarrddoouuss LLooccaattiioonnCustom made for passenger or freight elevators, these CJA hazardous location fixtures aredesigned for Division 1 applications, will containan internal explosion, and prevent the ignition ofcombustible dust.
