2 Safety shoes or boots with impact protection would be required for carrying or handling materials such as packages,objects, parts or heavy tools, which could be dropped; and, for other activities where objects might fall onto the shoes or boots with compression protection would be required for work activities involving skid trucks (manualmaterial handling carts) around bulk rolls (such as paper rolls) and around heavy pipes, all of which could potentiallyrollover an employee's feet. Safety shoes or boots with puncture protection would be required where sharp objects such asnails, wire, tacks, screws, large staples, scrap metal etc., could be stepped on by employees causing a foot pays for Protective Footwear ?In general, employers are required to purchase and provideemployees with necessary personal Protective equipment(PPE), including Protective Footwear . However, there are a few exceptions. Employees should consult their supervisorsregarding company-specific companiesmayelectto provide and pay for PPE even ifnot required to doso in accordance with OSHA are not required to pay for the following, but may require their use: Non-specialty safety-toe Footwear ( , leather work boots with steel toes) if the employee isallowed to wear it offthe job site.
3 Ordinary clothing,including insulated winter boots, that the employee would normally have to protect themselvesfrom the elements. Replacement PPE when the employee has lost or intentionally damaged the PPE. However, theemployermustprovide replacement PPE at a reasonable interval. PPE, including Footwear that the employee alreadyowns and requests to use instead of the PPE that the employerprovides at no cost to employees. Upgraded PPE that theemployee wants to buy and use rather than the PPE that the employer normally provides (ifallowed by the employer). 4 (I) Impact resistanceisrequired when carrying or handling heavy materials/objects that can be dropped onto thefeet and causeserious injury: (75 or50foot-pounds)(C) Compression Resistanceisrequired for work where a heavy object or item may roll over or a heavyanimalmay step on the toe. (75 or 50 correlates to 2,500 pounds or1750 poundsrespectively)Lines#3 reference additional sections in the standard. 5 (PR)Puncture/Penetration Resistantfootwear isrequired when there is a risk of sharp objects such as nails,wire, tacks, screws, large staples, scrap metal, etc. can penetrate the sole of the shoe.(SD) Static Dissipativefootwear isoften used when working on or constructing sensitive electrical toprevent the buildup of static electricity which can damage electrical components.(CS) Chainsaw Useprovides cut resistance to the feet in additionto apuncture resistant sole while operating achainsaw(or device with similar hazard).(DI) Dialectic Insulationisusually found as an overshoe and isdesigned to provide the wearer with additionalinsulation if accidental contact is made with energized electrical conductors, apparatus or circuits, usually in Hazards to Considernot Covered by theStandardsSlip resistance:The following work environment factors may affect slip resistance: type of surface material;smoothness of the walking surface; wet or dry surface; type ofliquid on the surface; temperature ofthe surfaceand the surrounding Protection:Lace-up boots that cover the ankle and provide support arerecommended when the user willbe navigating rough/uneven terrain, or riding horses,ATVs, or motorcycles.

For example, caretakers of animals thathave been challenged with human pathogens may berequired to don Protective shoecovers or boots that are easily disinfected. The material of construction must becompatible with specified FootwearOther Things to ConsiderSteel toe andComposite toefootwearmaybothhavethesame safety ratingsbut compositeis non-metallic or Insolesadded after the purchase may alter the effectiveness of the selectingadd-on devicesrealize thatneither the ANSI nor ASTM standards allows forthe use of add-on typedevices.
