The DICOM Standard is structured as a multi-part document using the guidelines established in the following document: ISO/IEC Directives, 1989 Part 3 : Drafting and Presentation of International Standards.

8 PS should be used as the base reference for the current parts of this Standard . - Standard - PS Page 5. 1 Scope and field of application This part of the DICOM Standard is PS of a multi-part Standard produced to facilitate the interchange of information between Digital Imaging computer systems in medical environments. This interchange will enhance diagnostic Imaging and potentially other clinical applications. The multi-part DICOM Standard covers the protocols and data that shall be supplied to achieve this interchange of information. This part of the Standard contains the registry of all DICOM Data Elements and all DICOM Unique Identifiers that are defined within the DICOM Standard .
