2 KUMARA WELGAMA, Minister of Transport. Colombo, 14th June, 2012. Regulations 1. These regulations may be cited as the Motor Traffic (Speed Limits) Regulations, No. 1 of 2012. 2. (1) The roads classified as A Roads, AB Roads, B Roads and Colombo Municipal Council Roads and set out in Part I, Part II, Part III and Part IV of the Schedule to these regulations shall be known as Built-up- area as along the roads. (2) The speed limit which shall be applicable in respect of all motor vehicles operating on the sections of the Built-up areas along the roads as are identified in Part I, Part II, Part III and Part IV of the Schedule to these regulations shall be fifty (50) kilometres per hour (kmph): Provided however, that the speed limit which shall be applicable in respect of land vehicles, motor tricycles, motor tricycle vans and special purpose vehicles operating on the SECTION of the built-up roads specified above, shall be forty (40).

3 Kilometres per hour (kmph). 3. (1) All other road sections in Sri Lanka which are not specified in the Schedule to these regulations shall be known as Non-Built-up areas . (2) The speed limit which shall be applicable in respect of the road sections of the Non-Built-up areas shall be as follows:- (a) seventy (70) kilometres per hour (kmph) for all categories of motor vehicles; and (b) sixty (60) kilometres per hour (kmph) for all motor coaches and all lorries: 1A. 2A I fldgi ( ^I& fPoh - YS% ,xld m%cd;dka;s%l iudcjd ckrcfha w;s fYI .ei m;%h - 2012'06'22. 4 Kilometres per hour (kmph). 4. The speed limits specified in these regulations shall be depicted by way of signs fixed at the relevant sections of the built-up and the non-built up areas along the roads to which these regulations apply. The signs so fixed shall conform in all particulars to the specifications set out for traffic signs as are contained in the Motor Traffic (Traffic Signs, Signals, Symbols and Road Markings Regulations, published in the gazette Extraordinary No. 441/ 18 of March 13, 1984, and further in the event that such regulation is rescinded, by any other regulation which shall be promulgated in its place. 5. 5 853/14 of January 13, 1995 as last amended by regulation published in gazette Extraordinary No. 1576/29 of November 21, 2008, is hereby rescinded. 6. In these regulations 'land vehicle', 'lorries', ''motor coaches", motor vehicles", ''motor tricycles", ''motor tricycle vans" and special purpose vehicles" shall have the same meaning as in the Motor Traffic Act (Chapter 203).
