RB & RS Pulling Tool - Evolution Oil Tools Inc.

1 RB & RS Pulling tool Purpose: Designed to pull down hole wireline equipment with external fishing necks. Description: Otis style letter designation indicates two feature: 1. The first letter indicates fishing neck style, and direction of jarring force to shear release. R Signifies Jar Up . S Signifies Jar Down . 2. The second letter designations indicate core length and reach capacity. B long core, short fishing neck reach, RB, SB . S medium core lengths, medium fishing neck reach RS , SS ( SS version seldom used). J short core length, deep fishing neck reach RJ . (available in jar up R style only). The Pulling tool dogs are the only parts that can be interchanged between Otis style R and S Pulling Tools of the same size.

2 The R and S Pulling tool inner dog flange profile is slightly under cut at the inner edge of the flange. The R and S Pulling Tools have a shear pin retainer as does the GS and GR . Operation: 1. When the Pulling tool slides over the fishing neck that is to be retrieved, the toolstring weight compresses dog spring forcing the dogs out as they slide up the beveled grooves of lower skirt to latch on fish. 2. Once the inner flange of the Pulling tool dogs pass the bottom flange of the fishing neck, the dog spring tension returns dogs to the bottom of beveled grooves of the lower skirt. 3. When the jarring impact has sheared the R and S Pulling Tools the core spring tension pushes the core up, raising the dogs which slide up the beveled dog grooves to the released position.

3 4. To re-pin the R and S Pulling Tools rotate shear pin fall out. With the use of a core extractor, to compress the core spring the core is pulled down in the Pulling tool until the shear pin holes line up. Sheared pieces of the pin is removed a new pin is installed. 5. Rotating the shear pin retainer turn completes the re-pinning of the tool . 4 Product 1 October 2011. RB & RS Pulling tool Precautions: When servicing look for damaged or cracked parts. With the JD series, ensure S Pulling tool will have enough travel to complete shearing operation. Although they look similar at a glance 2 and 2 1/2 nominal size Pulling tool dogs can not be interchanged. The 2 are slightly longer and thicker at the bottom edge, and if used in a 2 . Pulling tool the dogs will not release when the pin has been sheared. When ordering or replacing dogs the part number for 2 is 409R98 and 2 is 40R99. Disassembly Instructions: Remove the set screw from the fish neck. Place the skirt in a vise with the fish neck pointing right. Use a wrench to loosen the fish neck from the core, and remove it.

5 Use caution as there will be spring tension between these parts. Once the fish neck is removed, you can remove the spring sleeve and the core spring from the core. Remove the shear pin and push the core towards the end of the dogs. Leave approximately 1 of space between the end of the core and the end of the dogs. Using a releasing tool squeeze the dogs and push the core out the bottom of the skirt. You will now be able to remove the dogs by pushing them inward and off the dog washer. Use caution as there will be spring tension here. Once the dogs have been removed, you can turn the skirt over and slide the dog washer and dog spring out. Clean and inspect all parts for damage. Replace damaged parts as necessary.

6 Assembly Instructions: Place the skirt on a flat surface wit the bottom of the dog window facing up. Put the dog spring into the skirt and install the dog washer on top of the dog spring. Using an open end wrench, (small enough to fit inside the skirt, but large enough not to go through the dog washer) compress the dog spring by pushing down on the dog washer with the wrench. Push the dog washer down past the small windows below the dog window. Place one of the dogs into its window and onto the dog washer. Repeat this step for all dogs. Once all the dogs are in place, you can install the core. Carefully push the threaded end of the core past the end of the dogs and out the opposite end of the skirt. Align the shear pin holes in the skirt and the core and install the shear pin.

7 Slide the shear pin retainer onto the skirt over the end of the core. With the bottom of the skirt on a flat surface install the core spring and the spring sleeve over the core. To install the fish neck you will need to compress the core spring quite a bit in order to get the threads started. Once the fish neck has been installed and tightened, replace that set screw. R Pulling tool is now ready for use. ** Note: all Pulling Tools should be function tested to ensure that it will release from fish before running in the hole.**.
