The carrier is responsible f or delivering t he pipe. Make cert ain all mat erial list ed on t he bill-of-lading has arrived. The receiver must make cert ain t here has been no loss or damage. Should t here be any errors or damage, make proper not e on t he delivery receipt . Make claim in accordance with the carrier s inst ruct ion. Do not dispose of any damaged mat erial. Carrier w ill advise you of t he procedure t o f ollow f or f reight damage. Unloading Pipe should be low ered, not dropped, f rom t rucks t o t he ground or int o a t rench.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HANDLE PIPE BUNDLES BY PULLING ON STRAPPING OR PACKAGING MATERIAL. The f orklif t t ruck, boom and sling, or ot her mat erial handling equipment should be equipped t o avoid excessive sw inging. DO NOT USE CHAINS AS A SLING. Avoid all impact blow s, gouging, or abrasions caused by met al surf aces, rocks, mat erial handling equipment, or any ot her source. Cold Weather Handling: Ext ra care should be used in handling during cold w eat her. Phot o #1 - 3 - WARNING: Carelessly unloading pipe can be hazardous. Use appropriate equipment and stay clear when removing tie-dow ns, banding, and dunnage material. TABLE 1 Trench Preparation- Proper inst allat ion procedures and t rench preparat ion are essent ial t o successf ul PVC pipe perf ormance. Trench preparat ion procedures f or PVC pipe do not vary subst ant ially f rom procedures used w it h ot her piping product s.

There should be no more t rench prepared t han t he f oot age of pipe w hich can be laid in a day. A t ypical t rench cross sect ion and t erminology are given in f igure 1. Figure 1 Approximat e Joint Weight s (Lbs) Size DR 14 DR 18 DR 25 DR DR 41 DR 51 4" 65 51 38 6" 133 105 77 8" 227 180 132 10" 343 271 199 12" 487 385 282 14" 520 380 294 234 16" 669 490 380 304 245 18" 843 618 480 383 309 20" 1051 769 598 477 386 24" 1511 1106 860 686 554 30" 2325 1702 1315 1053 851 36" 3300 2435 1891 1509 1239 42" 3339 2593 2069 1671 48" 3379 2697 2178 - 4 - Stringing Pipe: Pipe should be placed near t he t rench on t he opposit e side of t he excavat ed eart h. The coupling should be point ed in t he direct ion of w ork progress. Trench width: Working space is t he primary considerat ion in det ermining t he t rench w idt h t o be used.

Trench w idt h at t he ground surf ace may vary w it h and depend upon dept h, t ype of soils, and posit ion of surf ace st ruct ures. The minimum clear w idt h of t he t rench, sheet ed or unsheet ed, measured at t he springline of t he pipe is generally specif ied at least one f oot (300 mm) great er t han t he out side diamet er of t he pipe t o enable backf ill mat erial t o be inst alled in t he haunching area. Ref er t o Figure 1 f or t he locat ion of t he haunch area. Where embedment compact ion is required, t he t rench shall be w ide enough t o accommodat e t he compact ion equipment . If minimum t rench w idt h is exceeded, and embedment compact ion is required, pipe zone haunching should be compact ed at least one pipe diamet er f rom t he pipe on bot h sides of t he pipe. Dewatering: Where condit ions are such t hat running or st anding w at er occurs in t he trench bottom or the soil in the trench bottom displays a quick tendency, the water should be removed by pumps and suit able means such as w ell point s or pervious underdrain bedding unt il t he pipe has been inst alled and t he backf ill has been placed t o a suf f icient height t o prevent pipe f lot at ion.

Foundation: An adequat e or st able f oundat ion should be present (or provided) t o unif ormly support t he f ull lengt h of t he pipe. Bell holes should be provided at each joint t o permit proper assembly and support of t he pipe. Unst able t rench bot t oms shall be st abilized by met hods and w it h mat erials required, by t he specif ying engineer, t o provide adequat e and permanent support f or t he condit ions encount ered. Phot o 2 Phot o 3 - 5 - Bedding: When rock, hard pan, boulders, or ot her mat erial (w hich might damage t he pipe) are encount ered in t he t rench, t he t rench bot t om should be over excavat ed 1/4t h of t he pipe diamet er, or a minimum of f our inches t o permit bedding. The bedding should consist of an evenly graded, f ree f low ing, granular mat erial w hich is f ree of large st ones or f rozen mat erial and w it h part icle size of up t o approximat ely 10% of t he pipe size and no larger t han 1 in size.

Bell holes should be ut ilized t o reduce axial def lect ion and support t he barrel of t he pipe. -Lubricant- Clean any dirt or f oreign mat t er f rom t he gasket and spigot . An even, unif orm applicat ion of gasket lubricant must be applied t o t he bevel and spigot t o t he f irst insert ref erence mark as w ell as t he cont act surf ace of t he gasket . Gasket lubricant may be applied w it h a sw ab, brush, or roller. Gasket lube is f urnished w it h each t ruckload of pipe. Addit ional lubricant may be purchased f rom your dist ribut or. Phot o 4 Phot o 5 (in open st orage) Phot o 6 (remove debris) Phot o 7 (clean annular space) Phot o 8 (lubricat e gasket ) Phot o 9 (lubricat e spigot ) - 6 - -Assembly- Assembly is made by sliding t he lubricat ed spigot end int o t he gasket ed bell end.

The gasket seals t he joint against leaks, int o or out of t he pipeline. Insert t he spigot end int o t he socket so t hat it is near cont act w it h t he gasket . Keep t he pipe lengt hs in proper alignment . Brace t he bell w hile t he spigot end is pushed t hrough t he gasket so t hat previously complet ed joint s in t he line will not be stacked, over belled, or insert ed past t he second ref erence mark. (ref er t o Encasement s.) Push t he spigot end in unt il t he lip of t he bell is bet w een t he ref erence marks on t he spigot end. If t he spigot is insert ed beyond t he f irst insert ref erence mark, laying lengt h w ill be lost . Loss of laying lengt h can be signif icant on long f oot age project s. Also, joint f lexibilit y is reduced w hen t he spigot is insert ed beyond t he second insert ref erence mark.

Some joint s may require barring t o seat t he joint . If so, use a w ood block t o prot ect t he end of t he pipe. A come-a-long may be pref erred t o t he bar and block, but a sw inging st ab is not recommended. Where t he physical w eight or t rench condit ions make t he recommended met hods unsaf e, joint s may be assembled using mechanical equipment provided t hat t he pipe is properly lubed and aligned. The end must be prot ect ed f rom damage, and t he joint must not be over belled or inserted beyond the second insert ref erence mark. If t he second insert ion mark is not visible af t er assembly, t he pipe w as over-insert ed. The joint needs t o be disassembled and done correct ly. Likew ise, if t he f irst mark f alls w ell short of t he lip of t he bell, t he pipe needs t o be pushed a lit t le f urt her unt il t he lip is bet w een t he t w o ref erence marks.
