9 Brundtland definition - meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. 2. ACI definition (developed by the airports) a holistic approach to managing an airport so as to ensure the integrity of the economic viability, operational efficiency, natural resource conservation and social responsibility (EONS) of the airport. I. INTRODUCTION Over the past several years, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been encouraging airport sponsors to incorporate sustainability in airport planning, design, and operations.

10 Sustainability has been defined to include the principles of economic growth, environmental stewardship, and social Current FAA programs that support sustainability include Airport Noise Compatibility Planning, the Voluntary Airport Low Emission Program, Environmental Management Systems, and most recently Airport Sustainability Planning. In our continuing efforts to assist airport sponsors in incorporating sustainability into airport planning, design, and operations, the FAA has decided to provide specific guidance to airports in two key focus areas.
