After the horrible and disturbing news about the sexual abuse of children by clergy and cover-up accusations against bishops, I could not help but wonder if the light attendance was because of anger or worse still, the exodus of some from the Catholic Church.

4 Many parishioners tried to console by saying, Oh I think it s just a beautiful weekend, and many people are down the shore. But I still worry. You cannot fault people for feeling that way. There is a lot of justifiable anger in many of us, and yes, even in me, your pastor. But wasn t last week s Gospel just what we needed to hear? Peter said in response to Jesus question, Will you also leave?: Lord to whom shall we go? You have the Words of everlasting life. That is why I became a priest, to carry those Words of everlasting life to people. I promise to continue to commit myself to being the best pastor I can be, who lives by what I preach. Nonetheless, the message of Jesus that I proclaim is the Words of everlasting life. And it is here in this parish that we will hear those Words. If you were away last week, you may have missed the announce-ment that we are having a Holy Hour of Prayer during Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament this coming Tuesday evening September 4, at 7pm in the church.

5 It will include the praying of the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. We will come in reparation for the sins of sexual abuse and immorality by members of the clergy that have hurt so many people. We will pray for healing for victims, and so much more. I recall the passage in the ninth chapter of St. Mark s Gospel. The apostles were disturbed because Jesus sent them to cure and drive out demons. The fact is that they did do that. But in one particular case, they were not successful, and they asked Jesus why they were unsuccessful. And He told them, This kind you can only drive out by prayer. I believe the demons that have engulfed our Church can only be driven out by substantial change in the way the Church operates, by honesty, transparency, accountability, and by a renewed life of prayer and holiness on the part of bishops, priests and laity. I invite you to come and begin that renewal Tuesday night, with us priests. In conclusion, if there is anyone out there who has been abused by a member of the clergy and is carrying that burden around in silence, please consider coming forward.
