Acknowledgements NUEPA has been involved in strengthening educational management information system for more than a decade. Initially the mandate was to develop a computerized information system for Primary level of EDUCATION but was confined only to DPEP districts/states. While launching Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in 2001, not only was the scope of DISE extended to the entire elementary level of EDUCATION but its coverage was also expanded from the DPEP districts to the entire country.

6 In 2005-06, all the districts were covered under DISE for the first time. With The Right to EDUCATION Act in 2009, the Data Capture Format of DISE was further modified. When Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) was launched, NUEPA extended coverage of DISE from the Elementary to Secondary and Higher Secondary levels of EDUCATION and developed on-line software in 2007-08. In 2012-13, a single Data Capture Format was developed for the entire SCHOOL EDUCATION in view of which the DISE software was re-designed and information collected from more than million schools. SCHOOL EDUCATION in INDIA : 2015-16 is based on data collected during U-DISE 2015-16 with 30th September, 2015 as date of reference. The document is based on the data received from as many as million schools spread over 680 districts across 36 States & UTs. A study of this magnitude cannot be completed without the active involvement and participation of the EMIS professionals at the national and sub-national levels.

7 I am thankful to all the State Project Directors of SSA and RMSA, the state level EMIS Coordinators and district level Programmers and Data Entry Operators for supply of data. I take this opportunity to thank UNICEF, Delhi, in particular Ms. Euphrates Gobina for consistently supporting EMIS activities ever since the inception of DISE and Secretary, Additional Secretary, Joint Secretary and Directors, Department of SCHOOL EDUCATION & Literacy, Government of INDIA , who played a crucial role in facilitating the implementation of U-DISE in various states. I am thankful to Prof. Jandhyala B. G Tilak, Vice-Chancellor (I/C), NUEPA, for encouragement and guidance. I take this opportunity and thank NUEPA. faculty for their support. The contribution of Mr. Naveen Bhatia, Computer Programmer, NUEPA in database management and software development, is gratefully acknowledged. I am thankful to U-DISE project team at NUEPA, especially Ms. Aparna Mookerjee, Consultant for computing indicators, Mr.

8 Jay Prakash Gupta for cre- ating graphs and Mr. Deepesh Kr. Singh for typesetting. I am also thankful to Mr Arun Joshi, Consultant (Publications, DISE Project) for timely bringing out the publication.
