Phase 2 Discovering Graphemes (Terms 2 4) During this phase you teach two types of lessons for each unit: In Lesson 1 you revise the Focus Sound and introduce students to the focus grapheme /s and Focus Words.

5 In Lesson 2 you teach Focus Concepts which include special words and sentence writing. Sound Icons and Sound Boxes Every year level in Sound Waves Spelling is organised around the 43 phonemes of Australian Icons and Sound Boxes are a crucial component of the program. They provide teachers and students with a consistent code to understand and explore phonemes and phoneme grapheme relationships. When you see a Sound Icon or Sound Box, say the phoneme it represents not the name of the Sound Icon or letter name. For example say /f/, not fish or the letter name f. /f/ as in fishSound Icon/f/ as in fishSound IcongraphemesSound BoxSound Icon Years 1 6 Years 1 6 share a consistent structure and cover the same SEQUENCE of phonemes organised into weekly units of work. Each unit contains a series of lessons:Focus Phoneme, grapheme /s & Focus Words lesson In the first lesson of every week you introduce students to the focus phoneme, grapheme /s and Focus Words of the Sound Unit.

6 Focus Concept lessons Throughout the rest of the week you teach students spelling and vocabulary concepts such as suffixes, homophones, and Greek and Latin Waves Spelling SCOPE and SEQUENCE F 6 6 Yearly PlanTerm 1: Exploring SoundsWeekMondayTuesdayWednesdayThursday Friday1/b/ as in balloon/k/ as in kite/d/ as in duck/f/ as in fish/g/ as in girl2/h/ as in house/j/ as in jellyfish/l/ as in lizard/m/ as in moon/n/ as in net3/ng/ as in ring/p/ as in pig/r/ as in robot/s/ as in seal/t/ as in tiger4/v/ as in vase/w/ as in web/y/ as in yoyo/z/ as in zebra/s/ as in treasure5/ch/ as in chicken/sh/ as in shell/th/ as in thong/th/ as in feather/a/ as in apple6/e/ as in egg/i/ as in igloo/o/ as in orange/u/ as in umbrella/ai/ as in snail7/ee/ as in bee/i_e/ as in ice-cream/oa/ as in boat/ar/ as in star/ir/ as in bird8/or/ as in horse/oo/ as in book/oo/ as in boot/ou/ as in cloud/oy/ as in boy9/eer/ as in deer/air/ as in chair/er/ as in ladderNote: A letter or letter combination in forward slashes indicates a phoneme, not a letter name.

7 In Phase 1, consonant sounds are introduced first, then vowel sounds. This order ensures students begin with the sounds that are easiest to identify in words (consonants in initial and final position) before working with those that are more difficult to identify (vowels in medial position). In Phase 2, students are introduced to single-letter graphemes ( m, a, t, s, i, d) before moving on to consonant digraphs ( sh, ch) and then finally more complex vowel graphemes ( ay, ee, ar). This order minimises confusion for students and maximises the pace at which they learn to spell and read.
