3 Example Proposal : Joe Smith Senior Seminar Project Proposal September 16, 2011. Senior Project Proposal I have always wondered what it would be like to be a firefighter. I know that I am not the type of person who would be happy with a desk job, and I love the idea of every day, every hour, even every minute being different and exciting. I also have always been active in my community and like to give back. Therefore, for my Senior Project I have decided to answer the Essential Question: What does it take to become a firefighter? The main element of my Project will be volunteering at the Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue washing trucks and helping at the desk.

4 This will also include going on ride-along calls and documenting my experience through photography and a journal of events. In order for my experience to be successful, I need to start by finalizing my internship with TVFR and preparing my schedule to accommodate extra responsibilities this trimester. I will need the calendar in my phone updated, a digital camera and a journal. I already have these three things, and will be typing my final journals on my laptop at home, and bringing my work in on a jump drive to work on during class. I will be specifically working with John Davies at TVFR, who is the Volunteer and Community Coordinator.

5 For all written and presentation elements, I will be working daily with my teacher Ms. Cole. To fulfill my hours, I am going to schedule the minimum number to be completed by the end of October. If I end up doing more, that will be great, but at least I will have the required amount done with plenty of time to spare. I will have to coordinate with my work to make sure I plan my time out well. This Project relates to my future career plans because I play on going into the medical or public service field as a fire fighter, EMT/paramedic or a correctional officer. Having this experience will help me to succeed in my future training as well as prepare me for what the job is actually like.

6 My timeline is as follows: September 16th Contacts made & volunteer hours set up. Formal Project Proposal DUE. TYPED TO MS. COLE. September 23rd Research & research notes complete. 5 volunteer hours. September 30th Research Outline DUE. 5 volunteer hours. October 28th all Extended Application hours complete, hour log typed and done. Portfolio coming together and photos developed. 10+ volunteer hours. November Complete research paper and assembly portfolio. Finish typing all journal entries. Work on college applications and scholarships. Present to the class. December 1st Community Exhibition presentation & reception. This is REQUIRED to pass.

7 Business attire. Bring at least 2 adults. I will keep track of my hours on my phone calendar, and record them on an Hours Log, which will be part of my portfolio. I will hold myself accountable by sticking to my timeline, checking in with Ms. Cole on a regular basis, and checking my grade in class once a week. I will set phone reminders for all important due dates to go off the night before. In addition, I will make sure to request December 1st off NOW so that I have that evening off work for exhibition. Because this Project consists mainly of volunteer hours, the only budget I will have to manage is the cost of gas to and from the station and the cost of ink for printing out my photos.

8 I estimate that the total will not be more than $15. I will know my Project is done when I have successfully discovered what it is really like to be a fire fighter. I hope to also know by then if that is what I want to do for a career after I graduate from high school. My final product will also be complete, and will document my experience fully. I will be presenting my Project to the class the last week of November, and to the community on December 1st at 7pm in the Hilhi Commons. My final portfolio is due at the end of the evening on December 1st.
